Key Responsibilities
In this role, the Staff Attorney will:

  • Deliver legal assistance to low-income clients across various legal matters, including housing, family law, public benefits, consumer rights, health law, education, and more.
  • Conduct interviews with clients seeking legal aid and evaluate their legal challenges, prioritizing those that impact their immediate human needs.
  • Provide comprehensive legal services, including legal research, factual investigation, advice and counsel, brief services, document preparation, dispute resolution, and representation in administrative and judicial settings.
  • Establish and maintain networking relationships with local bar associations, government entities, and community organizations that serve our clientele.
  • Facilitate outreach initiatives within client communities, including educational events and intake sessions at partner locations.
  • Ensure accurate documentation for grant reporting to funding sources, including maintaining detailed case records.
  • Actively engage in internal task forces related to specific areas of practice.
  • Demonstrate a high level of energy, organization, and dedication to the role and the mission of PSLS.

Compensation and Benefits
The Staff Attorney position is a full-time role, requiring 37.5 hours per week. PSLS offers a competitive salary aligned with similar organizations. The starting salary for newly licensed attorneys is $70,000 per year, with increases based on relevant experience. Qualifications

  • Preferred candidates are those currently licensed to practice law in Illinois or those licensed in another state eligible for reciprocity.
  • Experience in trial advocacy and negotiation is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent research abilities and computer proficiency.
  • Organizational skills and case management expertise.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Some travel may be required; candidates must possess a valid driver's license and/or reliable transportation.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience serving low-income populations.
