Job Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center plays a vital role in delivering high-quality patient care. Working in close collaboration with licensed Advanced Practice Clinicians, the LPN evaluates patients' reasons for visit and undertakes all patient care activities under the delegation and supervision of a licensed professional.

Key Responsibilities
  • Customer Service
    • Utilize current technology to efficiently pull patients from waiting rooms to exam areas.
    • Proactively communicate delays to patients.
    • Demonstrate professional behavior in all settings visible to patients and visitors.
    • Proactively identify patient/visitor needs and take steps to assist.
    • Apply age-specific/cultural considerations to patients.
  • Planning and Managing Care
    • Gather screening and other data for the healthcare team.
    • Meet basic patient/family needs by accompanying patients/families to exam rooms, preparing patients for examination, and performing diagnostic testing.
    • Work with MD/providers to maintain efficient, effective clinic flow, checking schedules, and organizing patient flow.
    • Assist MD/providers with routine office procedures and collect lab specimens.
    • Maintain patient charts and other patient care documents within the electronic health record.
    • Prepare diagnostic testing requisitions.
    • Communicate patient needs to MD/providers through accurate use of the electronic health record task system.
    • Ensure cleanliness of exam room equipment, instruments, and keep exam rooms adequately stocked.
    • Notify appropriate staff members when supply inventory is low to ensure the clinic is adequately stocked.
  • Patient/Family Education
    • Distribute patient/family education materials as directed by providers.
    • Incorporate various resources to teach and support patient and family learning.
  • Continuous Learning
    • Participate in staff meetings.
    • Develop and achieve personal and professional goals.
    • Contribute to the achievement of VIP goals.
    • Participate in quality improvement through data collection and documentation.
  • Communication and Collaboration
    • Communicate and collaborate effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
    • Coordinate clinic flow to optimize efficiencies.
    • Use EHR effectively.
    • Personal behavior positively influences the environment.
    • Receive feedback in a respectful and positive manner.
  • Lab Duties
    • Analysis of specimens
      • Identify and process patient samples using appropriate laboratory protocol, inclusive of laboratory safety protocol.
      • Perform analysis using appropriate procedures, including reagent preparation and appropriate QC.
      • Operate instruments and equipment accurately and efficiently using established protocol and QC checks.
      • Complete analysis within established time deadlines.
    • Evaluation of Results
      • Evaluate results obtained from patient and QC samples to assure validity before reporting values.
    • Lab Compliance
      • Maintain files per individual laboratory protocol.
      • Perform and document corrective and preventive maintenance and instrument function checks and records per department policy and protocol, both routine and periodic.
      • Recognize and document instrument malfunction and take corrective action by performing repairs or notifying a supervisor.
      • Restock, document receipt of, opening, and expiration.
    • Regular and Reliable Attendance Required
    • All Other Duties as Assigned
