Work Environment:

As patrol officers, you will spend a significant portion of your shift in a patrol vehicle, which may require long hours. Shift work, including evenings and nights, is a common expectation, along with foot or bicycle patrol duties. Officers will encounter various weather conditions and may face hazardous and high-pressure situations regularly.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen (either by birth or naturalization).
  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Completion of a certified Police Academy and successful passage of the TCOLE Peace Officer Licensing Exam is mandatory.
  • A valid driver’s license is essential.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is a prerequisite for employment.

Criminal Background:

  • No Class A or Felony convictions or court-ordered supervision/probation.
  • No Class B convictions or court-ordered supervision/probation within the last decade.
  • Former military personnel must not have any court-martial convictions exceeding a summary level.

Military Service Considerations:

Discharges that are dishonorable or related to misconduct that prevent future military service include:

  • Discharges under less than honorable conditions;
  • Discharges under other than honorable conditions;
  • Bad conduct discharges; or
  • Dishonorable discharges.

Applicants with a general under honorable conditions discharge must meet one of the following:

  • A minimum of 48 semester hours from an accredited institution with a GPA of at least 2.0; OR
  • Three years of full-time employment as a licensed peace officer by TCOLE or an equivalent body in another state; OR
  • 36 months of full-time employment in any field within the last four years.

Driving Record:

Applicants should demonstrate responsible driving behavior, and their license must not be at risk of suspension.

Tattoo and Body Art Policy:

All visible tattoos and body art will be evaluated individually. However, no visible tattoos or body art are permitted on the hands, neck, or above the neck, regardless of content.

Criminal Justice Employment Standards:

Current or former Criminal Justice employees must meet additional criteria, including:

  • Denial, revocation, or voluntary surrender of a law enforcement commission license.
  • Current suspension or voluntary surrender of license.
  • Prohibition by law from operating a vehicle or possessing firearms.
  • Discharge from any law enforcement agency for disciplinary reasons or resignation during an investigation.
  • History of sustained Internal Affairs complaints or poor conduct.

Medical Requirements:

  • Vision: Must be correctable to 20/20 or better, with uncorrected vision no worse than 20/200. Monocular vision is disqualifying.
  • Color Vision: Must pass a color vision test without significant errors.
  • Hearing: Must meet specific hearing standards, with no greater than 30db loss in critical frequencies.
  • Seizure Disorders: Must be controlled and seizure-free for one year.
  • Diabetes: Insulin-dependent diabetics with frequent or uncontrolled episodes are disqualified.
