POSITION OVERVIEW: The Osteopathic Medicine Educator is a highly skilled professional with extensive knowledge in the field of Osteopathic Medicine. The individual will engage in a variety of educational responsibilities, including delivering instruction in the Osteopathic Principles and Practices course, mentoring medical students, conducting interviews for prospective students, and actively participating in the institution's mission through research and community service. The educator will also contribute to the History & Physical Examination course and facilitate the problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following are essential academic duties that may be assigned to the Osteopathic Medicine Educator:
- Instruct students in various Clinical Examination courses;
- Lead the OPP course (12 hours/week - T/TH);
- Oversee OMS IV students at a community clinic;
- Assist in the Simulation Lab as needed;
- Conduct interviews for prospective candidates for the College of Medicine;
- Participate in committees and serve as an advisor to students and student organizations;
- Conduct at least two scholarly activities or research projects annually;
- Develop educational materials (A/V, demonstration models, lectures, lessons);
- Create clinical exercises that reflect real-world clinic protocols and case-based models;
- Prepare lectures, small group discussions, and curate reading materials in collaboration with faculty;
- Design evaluation tools to assess student performance and identify areas for improvement;
- Attend approved meetings that promote professional development;
- Follow directions and receive assignments from the Assistant Dean of Pre-Clinical Education;
- Facilitate Problem-Based Learning sessions as required;
- Draft detailed course syllabi, including assignments and readings for laboratory exercises and discussions;
- Be available during assigned hours for student instruction and clinic development; and
- Accept additional duties as necessary to meet institutional needs.
Minimum Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Candidates must demonstrate the required knowledge and the ability to explain and perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Understanding of medical coding and relevant information in the field;
- Adherence to State and Federal Regulations and Safety Protocols at the clinic level;
- Awareness of student and patient privacy regulations;
- Compliance with OSHA and safety guidelines;
- Strong communication skills and proficiency in computer applications (MS Office Suite);
- Excellent organizational capabilities;
- Attention to detail and accuracy;
- Certification in the Institutional Data System;
- Proficiency in diagnosis and treatment planning in general dentistry;
- Ability to maintain a consistent work schedule;
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including tact and diplomacy;
- Strong organizational and planning skills;
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects;
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships;
- Flexibility to accept additional duties as needed;
- Ability to work collaboratively in a respectful environment;
- Commitment to reporting to work as scheduled, fully engaged in the responsibilities of the role; and
- Willingness to accept guidance from supervisors in a respectful manner.
Education and experience equivalent to: D.O. degree required; teaching experience in an academic setting with two to five (2-5) years of practice preferred. A valid FL medical license or eligibility to obtain one is required.
