About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Engineer to join our team at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). As a key member of our Field Engineering team, you will play a critical role in the execution of projects and support the Construction Department during construction activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform the duties as the Project Field Engineer (PFE) on projects, coordinating efforts and providing guidance to less experienced Field Engineers.
  • Participate in walk-downs, generate sketches, help develop conceptual designs, evaluate existing systems, and generate and/or review functional requirement documents.
  • Execute work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures.
  • Ensure designs are properly reviewed, purchased, executed, installed, tested, and documented in accordance with the latest issued construction documents.
  • Review engineering documents for constructibility during 30%, 60%, and 90% design reviews and Issued For Construction.
  • Verify and report on construction installation quantities.
  • Interface with Project Engineering to facilitate responses to Requests for Information, Field Change Requests, and needed design changes.
  • Develop red-line drawings for incorporation into as-built drawings.
  • Prepare, review and approve material requisitions.
  • Assist in interpretation of drawings and specifications for field crews and craft supervision.
  • May serve as an internal Subject Matter Expert for the given engineering discipline.
  • May serve as a PFE on line-item projects.
  • Mentor Field Engineering staff and other technical personnel in methods, processes, and best practices.
  • Serve as an expert advisor to other project personnel, technical staff and management on technical issues.
  • Participate in project development by helping define customer needs, developing proposals and planning projects that will produce effective outcomes.
  • Assist in the preparation of work plans and work packages.
  • Apply past knowledge to develop processes that drive efficiency and accountability.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees.
  • Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB).
  • Or Professional Engineer license.
  • Plus at least 9 years' relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge; graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • Ability to interpret codes and standards related to engineering discipline.
  • Experience working as a member of a team of professional and technical personnel.
  • In-depth experience analyzing complex technical problems and developing solutions in a systematic manner.
  • Experience in as-builds, analysis, and discovery of older facilities that require modifications.
  • PE license desired but not required.
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary range: $116,000 - $177,569.60.
  • Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
  • 4/10s schedule, Monday-Thursday (7:00am - 5:30pm).
  • Must be able to work occasional overtime, if needed due to project schedules.
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required.
  • MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
