Job Description and Duties

As an Associate State Archaeologist with the Department of Parks & Recreation, you will play a crucial role in the preservation and management of California's cultural resources. This position is part of the Coastal Division, working at the Oceano Dunes Visitor's Center.

The successful candidate will perform complex archeological investigations and cultural resource management tasks, including planning, directing, and coordinating site investigation projects. You will provide research data and advice to support environmental reviews and participate in consultations with Native American groups and individuals.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and directing archeological investigation projects
  • Providing research data and advice to support environmental reviews
  • Participating in consultations with Native American groups and individuals
  • Preparing and submitting project budget requests
  • Acting in a lead capacity and training departmental staff and other personnel in archeological methods and cultural resources management techniques

This position requires a valid California Driver's License and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. You will be required to work occasional holidays or weekends and may be required to work at elevated heights or near machinery and heavy equipment.
