The Automation Controls Specialist will take charge of all software-related elements for a variety of machinery and tooling initiatives. These projects can range from minor research and development tasks to extensive production systems. The specialist will collaborate with clients to clarify their requirements and specifications for each project.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, test, implement, and integrate software solutions associated with custom automation, machine vision, feedback systems, robotics, and data collection and management.
  • Program and integrate various commercial components (cameras, robots, sensors, motors, etc.).
  • Adhere to project budgets and timelines.
  • Communicate progress and challenges with Project Managers.
  • Assist the production team during debugging, commissioning, and installation of equipment.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on mechanical and electrical integration.
  • Manage relationships with external suppliers.
  • Work with clients to refine and align project requirements.
  • Coordinate with clients on functional and user interface requirements (HMIs, MES integration, etc.).
  • Support equipment deployment and maintenance at client locations. Some travel may be required for this role, approximately 5-10%.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in software development for PLCs or similar devices.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (VB.NET or C preferred).
  • Practical experience with single-board microcontrollers or instrumentation platforms (Arduino, Raspberry PI, National Instruments).
  • Advanced knowledge of HMI/GUI and PLC development software (Rockwell, Siemens, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Vision Systems (Cognex, Keyence, etc.).
  • Experience with field devices (sensors and actuators), digital and analog I/O signal processing, and interfacing techniques.
  • Knowledge of .NET and COM/ActiveX environments and SDK/APIs implementation.
  • Understanding of communication protocols (RS232, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, CAN bus).
  • Experience in programming and tuning servo motors, stepper motors, and VFD controlled motors.
  • Direct experience troubleshooting automated systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in an engineering discipline.
  • Over 5 years in a controls design position within an industrial automation or machinery manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to specify vision equipment, including lenses, lighting, filters, and sensors.
  • Capability to interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics.
  • Proficiency in reading mechanical drawings.
