Position Summary:

The Workforce Development initiatives aim to deliver exceptional personalized employment placement services and comprehensive support to foster economic growth and stability, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for participants and their families. Under the guidance of the Farm Supervisor, the Agricultural Support Specialist collaborates with both internal and external stakeholders to advance the health, wellness, engagement, employment, and community goals of the program. This role is centered on two primary objectives: distributing high-quality local produce to those in need and focusing on produce production for the Rush Veggie Rx initiative. This is a part-time/seasonal role during the growing seasons, with responsibilities including planting, maintenance, harvesting, post-harvest handling, distribution, record-keeping, and volunteer coordination. The Agricultural Support Specialist applies industry expertise and best practices to further the mission and vision of Heartland Alliance while contributing to cultural development and management efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the coordination and execution of farm operations.
  • Implement crop plans, contribute to planting schedules, and project yields based on consumer needs.
  • Handle and deliver produce in compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain the site, buildings, supplies, and equipment to ensure cleanliness and effectiveness.
  • Coordinate the efforts of transitional job participants, volunteers, and youth involved in urban agriculture activities.
  • Utilize the Heartland Alliance Philosophy of Care when interacting with participants.
  • Support the achievement of program and contractual objectives.
  • Ensure adherence to organizational and program policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience in urban agriculture or a related field is essential.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to qualify as a certified Heartland Alliance Driver.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to execute field plans while adapting to unforeseen variables such as weather and pest issues.
  • Independent travel throughout the designated area is required.
  • Strong presentation and leadership skills for group activities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google applications, and other relevant software.
  • Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to build relationships and collaborate with diverse teams.
  • Ability to manage confidential information professionally.
  • High levels of collaboration, emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical skills.
  • Capability to solve practical problems in varied situations with limited standardization.
  • Ability to work autonomously while remaining self-motivated.
  • Strategic thinking and consultancy skills.

Work Environment:

  • The work environment typically has a moderate noise level.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and work location is necessary to meet participant needs and contractual obligations.
  • Program sites are located throughout the designated area, and employees may be required to report to various locations as needed.
