Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Farm Assistant to join our team at Heartland Human Care Services. As a key member of our urban agriculture program, you will play a critical role in supporting the growth and distribution of fresh produce to those in need.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the planning, execution, and maintenance of farm operations, including crop planning, planting, and harvesting.
  • Deliver and handle produce in accordance with post-handling and health code regulations.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision to ensure the smooth operation of farm activities.
  • Support the maintenance needs of the site, including buildings, supplies, and equipment.
  • Coordinate the work of transitional jobs participants, volunteers, and other stakeholders involved in urban agriculture activities.
  • Utilize Heartland Alliance's Philosophy of Care when engaging with participants.
  • Assist in achieving program and contractual outcomes.
  • Ensure the implementation of organization and program/department policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • Minimum High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience in urban agriculture or a related field.
  • Current driver's license and ability to qualify as a certified Heartland Alliance driver.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in presentation skills and leadership of group activities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Chrome, Outlook/Exchange, and other software used by Heartland Alliance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Employees may be required to report to various program sites throughout the Chicago area, including the North, West, and South sides of Chicago, as well as the suburbs.

Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to talk and hear.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, and/or crawl.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
