Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Legal Support Specialist to provide professional support services to our General Counsel. The ideal candidate will possess considerable knowledge of legal procedures and practices, legal terminology, administrative law procedures, the Texas Public Information Act, and the Local Government Records Act.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor general legal and litigation activities related to complaints and grievances, lawsuits, contracts, public information requests, subpoenas, elections, and records management to ensure timely filing of documents and responses.
  • Coordinate District trustee and bond elections, working directly with the Superintendent, General Counsel, Trustees, and Election Officials.
  • Coordinate the gathering of information and documents from various departments and campuses to respond to litigation discovery, complaints, in-house investigations, and grievance hearings.
  • Work with General Counsel and outside legal firms in the preparation of necessary documents related to contracts and employee matters, student matters, and other legal matters.
  • Prepare the official record for grievance hearings before the board of trustees, schedule hearings with all parties, and prepare notice letters.
  • Assist campuses and departments in resolving general legal issues, interpreting and implementing District policies, procedures, and court documents.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of the legal assistant.
  • Assist in TASB Policy Updates and Local District Updates, coordinating policy changes with TASB to update the online policy manual, maintain the District's paper policy manual, and the history of District policy.
  • Draft District procedures, review current procedures, and oversee the maintenance of the District's Procedure Manual.
  • Coordinate the District's response to Public Information Act Requests within strict timelines.
  • Oversee and respond to properly served subpoenas for District records, verifying validity, coordinating timely compliance, collecting responsive documents, redacting as necessary, and preparing business records and affidavits.
  • Coordinate Board agenda items for submission to the Board of Trustees.
  • Compose routine correspondence and memoranda in accordance with instructions.
  • Review court orders regarding child custody and possession, expunctions, and the sealing of files/records, providing guidance to departments and campuses as needed.
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written form, providing judgment and discretion when handling confidential information.
  • Work independently and exercise discretion in the performance of all duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.

Requirements:

  • Prior experience working in the legal field and in a public-school setting.
  • Associates degree, Paralegal certification, or equivalent work experience in the legal field and the education field.
  • Proficient skills in typing, data entry, word processing, and file maintenance.
  • Ability to operate computer/computer applications, including Excel, Google Docs, and contract management systems such as Adobe Sign.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with disgruntled individuals in situations involving the school district.
  • Excellent public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
