Job Title: Conservation Biologist

We are seeking a highly motivated Conservation Biologist to join our team at Clearwater Marine Aquarium. As a key member of our Sea Turtle Conservation Program, you will play a vital role in supporting the completion of all activities outlined in our Marine Turtle Permit.

About the Job

The successful candidate will assist with daily sea turtle nesting surveys within the designated survey area, adhering to the FWC Marine Turtle Conservation Handbook, city, state, and federal laws, as well as our organization's policies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough sea turtle nesting surveys, identifying and documenting all nesting activities within the designated area.
  • Mark nest sites and document evidence of predation, human disturbance, and nest hatching.
  • Enter all data into our Excel database for accurate record-keeping.
  • Communicate with municipal entities to facilitate mechanical beach cleaning.
  • Conduct nest evaluations, assess disorientation events, and submit relevant forms to FWC.
  • Ensure safe release or transport of hatchlings found within the survey area, under the guidance of our Supervisor, Senior Biologist, and FWC regulations.
  • Support night monitoring of nests equipped with restraining cages, silt screens, or other approved protection measures.
  • Assist with response to and documentation of sea turtle stranding events within the survey area.
  • Accurately collect and manage data, contributing to the completion of reports by established deadlines.
  • Participate in training volunteers and interns on sea turtle nesting activities and management practices.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies, ensuring efficient program operations.
  • Operate CMA vehicles safely during beach visits and transportation to and from the aquarium.
  • Perform vehicle maintenance and cleanliness tasks.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with ability to interact effectively with the public.
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Capacity to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Experience with four-wheel drive vehicles and all-terrain vehicles.
  • Excellent time management skills, with ability to prioritize multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Adaptability in fast-paced environments.
  • Self-motivated, confident, and disciplined individual with excellent work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Education/Professional Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Zoology, or related field.
  • A minimum of one season of experience performing sea turtle nesting surveys in Florida, paid or unpaid.
  • Preference given to candidates with paid sea turtle nesting survey experience and documented knowledge of multiple species.
  • Understanding and compliance with the FWC Marine Turtle Conservation Handbook.
