Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Food Service Manager to oversee all aspects of kitchen operations at our 120-bed domestic and sexual violence shelter, which will expand to a 135-unit, 360-bed facility in 2025. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing inventory, budgeting, sanitation, data entry, and ensuring strict adherence to food safety regulations set by city, county, state, and funders, including grant programs.

Responsibilities
  • Manage inventory levels for food and kitchen supplies, ensuring compliance with donor guidelines (e.g., Houston Food Bank).
  • Monitor stock levels, place orders, and coordinate deliveries, ensuring supplies are stocked adequately while avoiding waste.
  • Implement inventory control measures to reduce waste, optimize cost-efficiency, and prepare for the expanded operations of a larger shelter.
  • Collaborate with senior management to create and adhere to kitchen budgets that account for both current and future needs (360-bed shelter).
  • Track and document expenses related to food purchases, equipment maintenance, staffing, and food program grants (e.g., CACFP).
  • Ensure compliance with all city, county, state, and federal sanitation and food safety regulations, including CACFP guidelines.
  • Develop and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for food preparation, cleaning, and sanitizing equipment/workspaces.
  • Conduct regular safety and sanitation audits, especially in preparation for the expanded shelter capacity.
  • Lead, supervise, and motivate kitchen staff to maintain productivity, efficiency, and team morale.
  • Provide ongoing training in food safety, handling, and sanitation procedures, particularly in preparation for managing a higher volume of food preparation and documentation.
Requirements
  • Associates degree in culinary arts or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in food service with high-volume, institutional, residential or shelter kitchen setting.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in leading a team with direct reports.
  • Experience with grant-funding food programs, and documentation requirements, strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams).
  • Computer savvy and able to learn new applications and systems quickly.
  • Strong data-entry skills.
  • Texas food handler's certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Texas driver's license with a clean driving record; reliable transportation and the ability to travel to off-site locations as needed.

  • Annual Compensation: $55,000 - $60,000.
