Job Title: Data Director

Job Summary:

The Data Director will lead the development and implementation of the Data strategy, ensuring the Houston Food Bank (HFB) meets its current and future needs. This role will oversee data integrity, data standards, and new collection and integration initiatives. The Data Director will manage a team responsible for data-driven decision-making and will work closely with executive leadership to prioritize reports and daily requests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute Data Strategy to meet HFB's needs.
  • Define project scope, value, objectives, and milestones for Data projects.
  • Provide project-specific reporting and strategic goal updates to stakeholders.
  • Maintain comprehensive project documentation and monitor scope creep.
  • Lead design plans and processes for collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data.
  • Promote a culture of data-driven discussions and healthy skepticism.
  • Analyze findings and present them to peers and leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with data agreements and facilitate new agreements.
  • Enforce HFB Data Privacy, Management, and Collection policies.
  • Plan and conduct statistical research projects.
  • Work with the Data Steering Committee to prioritize data use cases.
  • Build and manage the data budget.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, computer science, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in data management and analytics.
  • 5+ years of experience managing a team.
  • Hands-on experience with SQL, R, Python, T-SQL, DBT, or other ETL scripting languages.
  • Experience with Git and dbt for source control and CI/CD.
  • Experience with SPSS, SAS, STATA, and/or other statistical reporting tools.
  • Experience with data models and reporting packages (Power BI, Tableau, Retool).
  • JavaScript experience.
  • Experience with API integration and managing Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Azure.
  • Recent experience with data security standards.
  • Experience working with Protected Health Information (PHI) and complex data.
  • Experience managing a hybrid (cloud and on-premises) environment.

Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Access, Word, etc.).
  • Ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Excellent understanding of data administration and management functions.
  • Familiarity with modern database and information system technologies.
  • Analytical mindset with problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to clearly communicate data-related work and information for technical and lay audiences.
  • Ability to listen, identify, analyze, and take ownership of user problems.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those the employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While the job is generally performed in an enclosed office environment, the employee is occasionally exposed to freezers, enclosed and/or tight spaces, wet and/or humid conditions, areas in which moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals are present, strong food-related smells, and outside weather conditions.

Travel Required:

Minimal travel is required for this position (up to 10% of the time and on a domestic basis).
