Position Title: Orientation & Mobility Specialist

Role Summary:

The Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist is responsible for delivering tailored O&M training to individuals of varying ages who are blind or legally blind. This role aims to enhance the independence of clients residing, working, or enrolled in educational programs across the designated service areas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive Orientation and Mobility training to clients as referred.
  • Ensure the safety, functionality, and independence of individuals through effective instruction.
  • Evaluate client needs, set achievable goals, and develop personalized lesson plans.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of client progress and outcomes in compliance with organizational standards.
  • Utilize electronic documentation systems to manage client information efficiently.
  • Review client data from relevant databases to inform instructional strategies.
  • Complete necessary applications and forms as required.
  • Conduct regular visits to clients to monitor progress and adjust goals as needed.
  • Perform timely reporting and data entry related to client cases.
  • Order and provide training on adaptive equipment as needed.
  • Engage in effective communication with clients, families, and educational staff to foster successful outcomes.
  • Stay informed on the latest trends in adaptive technology and O&M practices.
  • Design and implement educational programs for youth during summer sessions.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities such as conferences and training sessions.
  • Facilitate training sessions as directed by supervisory staff.
  • Maintain knowledge of current assistive technologies relevant to O&M.
  • Acquire continuing education units (CEUs) to uphold certification standards.
  • Contribute to the development of special projects as assigned.
  • Attend and prepare for all relevant meetings and training sessions.
  • Act as a Mandatory Reporter and complete required training.
  • Provide instructional support to students in various programs as needed.
  • Serve on committees to enhance collaboration with external organizations.
  • Supervise and mentor O&M student interns.

Required Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and general software applications.
  • Exhibit flexibility, patience, and attention to detail in all tasks.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to clients and stakeholders.
  • Possess strong counseling skills, balancing agency policies with client needs.
  • Effectively engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a dynamic work environment.
  • Communicate clearly with colleagues and external partners.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel within service areas.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Orientation and Mobility or equivalent certification required.
  • ACVREP certification or eligibility to obtain certification is mandatory.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 15 pounds or more.
  • Capability to perform physical tasks such as kneeling, sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Regularly engage in repetitive motions involving wrists and hands.
  • Ability to crawl as needed during instruction.
