Position Overview
The Chief Safety and Security Officer at KIPP Columbus is a pivotal member of the Operations Leadership and Regional School Support teams, responsible for overseeing safety and security initiatives across all campus schools.

This role involves leading the Safety and Security team in the strategic planning, implementation, and coordination of all safety measures and operations on campus. Key responsibilities include collaborating with law enforcement and external agencies on threat assessments and emergency operations, as well as developing policies and procedures to ensure the safe functioning of our schools and campus.

The Chief Officer will enhance interactions among staff, students, and the community, lead cross-functional teams, and manage partnerships with security vendors to uphold campus safety. Additionally, this position will support the academic team in fostering strong relationships within the school community, promoting safety beyond the immediate environment to protect students and staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fostering a culture of safety across KIPP Columbus and its schools:
    • Understanding and embodying the safety climate within KIPP Columbus and the broader community.
    • Establishing safety and security goals and priorities in collaboration with the regional School Support Team and School Leaders.
  • Overseeing emergency preparedness initiatives:
    • Developing and maintaining essential non-emergency procedures and training for KIPP Columbus schools.
    • Ensuring on-site staff implement effective procedures for daily operations, including arrival and dismissal protocols and routine safety drills.
  • Managing critical safety and security functions, including:
    • ID distribution for staff and students.
    • Weapons abatement strategies.
    • Infrastructure safety measures.
    • Visitor safety systems.
    • Vendor management.
    • Surveillance and alarm systems.
    • Policy development and protocol enforcement.
  • Planning and conducting annual safety training for all staff and leading safety initiatives such as community forums.

Collaboration with Operations and Academic Teams
  • Providing guidance on daily security operations and staffing needs.
  • Advising on the acquisition and maintenance of safety equipment.
  • Participating in the safety and security budget development.
  • Engaging with stakeholders to inform safety initiatives.

Crisis Management
  • Acting as the primary contact for escalated security issues or emergencies.
  • Coordinating with community leaders to align safety plans.
  • Supporting the Safety and Security team in maintaining effective relationships with students and staff.
  • Overseeing post-incident reporting and compliance audits.

External Representation
  • Representing KIPP Columbus in committees and community discussions on safety improvements.
  • Maintaining relationships with local law enforcement and emergency services.

Operational Assessment
  • Monitoring daily operations to identify safety protocol enhancements.
  • Ensuring compliance with reporting and contract requirements.
  • Providing high-quality security services to safeguard individuals and property.

Vendor Coordination
  • Managing partnerships with safety and security vendors to ensure cohesive efforts.
  • Setting expectations and conducting regular meetings with vendors.
  • Delivering progress updates to internal stakeholders.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience in contract security, facilities management, military, law enforcement, or K-12 safety.
  • Proven ability to engage students and develop policies.
  • Strong relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment while working independently.
  • Capacity to manage multiple priorities and complex situations.
  • Familiarity with the Columbus community is preferred.
