Position Overview
The Chief Safety and Security Officer at KIPP Columbus is a pivotal member of the Operations Leadership and Regional School Support teams, responsible for overseeing safety and security measures across all campus schools.

This role involves leading the Safety and Security team in the strategic planning, implementation, and coordination of safety initiatives and operations. Key responsibilities include collaborating with law enforcement and external agencies on threat assessments and emergency protocols, as well as developing policies to ensure the secure operation of our schools.

The Chief Officer will enhance interactions among staff, students, and the community, lead cross-functional teams, and manage vendor partnerships to uphold campus safety. This position also supports the academic team in fostering strong relationships within the school community, promoting safety beyond the immediate environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fostering a culture of safety across KIPP Columbus and its schools:
    • Internalizing the safety climate and culture within KIPP Columbus and the community.
    • Setting safety and security goals and priorities in collaboration with the regional School Support Team and School Leader Team.
  • Overseeing emergency preparedness initiatives:
    • Establishing non-emergency procedures and training for KIPP Columbus schools.
    • Ensuring efficient daily procedures for arrival and dismissal, including staff coordination and communication.
  • Managing essential safety and security functions:
    • Staff and Student ID management.
    • Weapons abatement and visitor safety systems.
    • Vendor and infrastructure management, including camera and alarm systems.
  • Planning and conducting annual safety training for all staff, leading safety initiatives such as town halls.
Collaboration and Support

  • Providing guidance to the Operations Team on daily security operations and staffing needs.
  • Advising on safety equipment acquisition and maintenance.
  • Participating in the development of the safety and security budget.
Crisis Management

  • Acting as the lead for escalated security issues or emergencies on campuses.
  • Coordinating with community leaders to ensure effective safety plans.
  • Supporting the Safety and Security team in maintaining relationships with students and staff.
Vendor Management

  • Overseeing safety and security partnerships to ensure collaboration across all efforts.
  • Managing expectations and providing regular updates to stakeholders.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience in contract security, facilities management, military, or law enforcement preferred.
  • Ability to foster relationships and work independently.
  • Familiarity with the local community is advantageous.
