Job Summary

The Texas Department of Insurance is seeking a highly skilled Administrative Law Judge I to join our team. As an Administrative Law Judge I, you will preside over contested case hearings on indemnity disputes arising under the Texas Workers' Compensation Act. You will also preside over appeals of independent review organization decisions regarding the determination of medical necessity for a health care service. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong analytical and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

* Conduct contested case hearings involving indemnity and medical necessity disputes
* Rule on prehearing matters and motions, swear in witnesses, receive testimony, allow examination and cross-examination of witnesses, accept documentary evidence, allow the presentation of evidence by summary measures, ensure the rights of the parties are preserved, and fully develop the facts required to permit making the factual determinations necessary to resolve the legal issues in dispute
* Judge the relevance and materiality of the evidence offered and the weight and credibility to be given to the evidence and resolve the issues in dispute based on current legal precedent
* Assist with quality assurance processes as required
* Write a Decision and Order (D&O) that resolves the disputed issues and is legally, factually, and grammatically correct

Requirements

* Graduation from an accredited law school with an L.L.B or J.D. degree
* Two years of experience as a practicing attorney
* License to practice law in the State of Texas
* Member in good standing with State Bar of Texas

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience in the Texas Workers' Compensation system and prior experience as an administrative law judge or litigator
