Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Industrial Hygiene Specialist to join our team at Penn State University. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating and mitigating workplace health hazards, developing and implementing industrial hygiene programs, and providing technical expertise to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and assess workplace health hazards, including airborne contaminants, noise, temperature extremes, and ergonomic stressors.
  • Develop and implement industrial hygiene programs to control health hazards and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the University's Respiratory Protection Program, providing implementation guidance and developing necessary training materials and tools.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive approach to the management of specific substances, including lead, silica, formaldehyde, cadmium, carcinogens, and other materials regulated by OSHA.
  • Manage the University's Confined Space Entry Program, providing implementation guidance and developing necessary training materials and tools.
  • Review construction and modification plans for ventilation systems, gas monitoring systems, and other installations designed to control potential health exposures.
  • Assess program metrics to identify new performance goals and training opportunities.
  • Manage data associated with assigned programs and ensure that records are maintained in accordance with regulatory and University requirements.
  • Serve as a team lead in responding to incidents that create potential health hazards and coordinate with EHS staff, campus units, police, fire, and contractors.
Requirements
  • Minimally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, or a related discipline plus six years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Thorough understanding of industrial hygiene practices, knowledge of occupational safety and environmental protection principles and regulations, and demonstrated experience communicating technical information to a wide range of audiences.
  • Ability to achieve medical clearance and wear respiratory protection.
  • Recognition as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) is preferred.

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
