Position Summary

Health eCareers is in search of a Charge Nurse with extensive experience in patient care and a deep understanding of specific patient populations.

The Charge Nurse is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the daily operations of a designated shift within a clinical unit. This role includes supervising staff and facilitating communication with physicians and internal stakeholders to ensure optimal patient and family-centered care. The Charge Nurse is recognized as a change leader, consistently driving initiatives to enhance organizational systems that align with the department's mission, vision, and values. This position requires adeptness in creative problem-solving, conflict negotiation, and collaboration.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate insight, sound judgment, and clinically informed risk-taking. They will possess foresight regarding the impact of nursing care on patient outcomes, drawing from intuition and experience.

Key responsibilities include:

- Completing employee evaluations, risk management, and unit management reports within established timelines.
- Identifying the need for revisions and assessing the effectiveness of operational forms.
- Providing and coordinating resources necessary for optimal patient outcomes within the unit.
- Ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Staying informed about innovative clinical trends through benchmarking and evidence-based practices.

The Charge Nurse will also:

- Model effective delegation skills and assist colleagues in utilizing the Synergy model for care.
- Mentor other Registered Nurses in the role and responsibilities of Charge Nurse.
- Evaluate resource utilization and cost containment strategies.
- Lead and coordinate team dynamics among staff members, fostering leadership development in others.

In addition, this role involves:

- Taking a leadership position in cultivating an environment that encourages open communication.
- Acting as a mediator in resolving conflicts among nursing staff.
- Addressing unacceptable communication or behavior as necessary.
- Managing unit staffing to meet departmental needs and initiating changes to address managerial challenges.

The Charge Nurse will actively participate in regulatory agency preparations and assist with administrative tasks such as budget planning and staffing coordination. They will support administrative decisions and facilitate daily operational matters with the team.

This position challenges and shapes systems both within the unit and across the hospital to achieve optimal outcomes, while being attuned to the needs of colleagues and patients through supportive and non-judgmental behaviors.

Empowerment and advocacy for nurses are key aspects of this role, as is the implementation of innovative strategies to meet the needs of patients and families. The Charge Nurse will address customer concerns and complaints appropriately, ensuring effective follow-up with relevant parties.

Furthermore, the Charge Nurse will:

- Identify, initiate, and collaborate on necessary educational programs.
- Develop leadership-focused in-service training sessions.
- Ensure compliance with educational requirements through effective scheduling and planning.

Lastly, the Charge Nurse will engage in performance reviews with input from the Unit Director and incorporate the Synergy model for care in nurse/patient assignments. They must fulfill all Clinical Nurse I Employee Commitments and achieve the necessary points and contact hours as outlined in the clinical lattice point system to maintain their position.

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.
- A minimum of two years of experience as a Registered Nurse, including at least two years in the relevant area of focus.
- A valid, active, unencumbered Nursing license or a temporary permit approved by the relevant licensing board. Certification is preferred.
- BLS certification is required; ACLS may be necessary in designated departments.
