Position Overview

The role involves engaging in the research and development of innovative, laser-based spaceflight instruments that facilitate in-situ geochronology studies throughout the Solar System.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary laboratory to design, construct, and enhance cutting-edge spacecraft instruments for scientific missions.
  • Participate in the entire lifecycle of instrumentation systems, from initial concept through to delivery of flight-ready instruments.
  • Assist senior research and development staff in pioneering research that incorporates pulsed lasers, mass spectrometry, and advanced data acquisition systems.
  • Work alongside scientific teams to develop and validate laser-based instruments aimed at in-situ isotopic geochronology.
  • Engage in hands-on activities involving Class IIIb/Class IV pulsed and continuous wave lasers, ultra-high vacuum systems, pressurized gases, cryogenic technologies, and high-voltage systems.
  • Address a diverse range of experimental flight hardware challenges, focusing on the design, assembly, and management of mechanical and electrical systems for data collection.
  • Contribute to the design, fabrication, and performance testing of various optomechanical systems, including liaising with external suppliers for instrumentation hardware and laboratory equipment.
  • Conduct experimental data collection in an optical laboratory setting, develop LabView data acquisition and control systems, and create CAD models for new hardware assemblies.
Qualifications

A Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Optical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Applied Physics, or a related engineering discipline is required.

  • For PhD holders: At least 1 year of experience with optomechanics, lasers, and high vacuum systems, along with academic or professional experience in a laboratory environment.
  • For BS or MS holders: 1-3 years of experience with optomechanics, lasers, and high vacuum systems, complemented by academic or professional laboratory experience.
  • Minimum of 1 year of demonstrated experience in constructing experimental systems, scientific instruments, or engineering test setups.

A valid and clear driver's license is mandatory.
