ROLE SUMMARY

We are in search of a skilled professional to join our Risk Management division. The Chief Risk Officer will operate under the guidance of the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) while maintaining indirect relationships with the GTB Governmental Tribal Manager, EDC General Managers, Resort General Manager, and the Grand Traverse Economic Development Corporation (GTED) CEO. This role encompasses oversight of risk management, safety protocols, and insurance matters pertaining to the Grand Traverse Band (GTB), including property, casualty, auto, and general liability insurance. The Chief Risk Officer will lead initiatives to identify, assess, manage, monitor, and report on critical risk management challenges. Additionally, this position will advocate for a systematic and disciplined approach to risk compliance and best practices throughout all levels of the Tribal Government and its enterprises.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Formulates and executes comprehensive safety and accident prevention initiatives aimed at minimizing occupational hazards, injuries, and financial losses for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa & Chippewa Indians. Collaborates with CEOs, GMs, and the Governmental Tribal Manager on all aspects of loss control and risk mitigation.
  • Analyzes risk management incidents, performs root-cause assessments, and recommends and implements effective risk management strategies, including safety and security policies, business continuity plans, and recovery measures.
  • Oversees relationships with insurance providers, brokers, third-party claims adjusters, and underwriters.

QUALIFICATIONS


• Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Occupational Safety and Health, or a related discipline is required.


• A minimum of six (6) years of hands-on experience in risk management, including loss prevention and safety program development, with at least three (3) years in a managerial leadership capacity.


• Alternatively, candidates with ten (10) years of relevant experience in risk management, including loss prevention and safety program development, with a minimum of three (3) years in a managerial role will be considered.


• Proven experience in developing risk management policies, conducting bid processes, and negotiating various business insurance contracts.


• Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations, with the ability to familiarize oneself with MIOSHA, Fire Codes, and other Tribal, Local, and State regulations.


• Must obtain and maintain a LEVEL "A" license from EPA Underground Storage Tanks (UST) training within the first thirty (30) days of employment.


• Strong computer, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential.


• Experience in handling Workers' Compensation claims is required.


• Prior safety-related experience in a casino and/or tribal setting is highly preferred.


• Certification as a Safety Professional or Associate in Risk Management (ARM) is preferred but not mandatory.


• A valid driver’s license and insurability through our insurance provider are required.
