Maintenance Operator

Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Operator to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a Maintenance Operator, you will be responsible for performing a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
- Attend work zone training, prepare work zones, and perform traffic control
- Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, including identifying workplace safety hazards, making suggestions for improvement, wearing proper personal protection equipment, and maintaining current knowledge of safety rules and regulations
- Participate as a working team member performing manual labor, including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
- Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance, and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment
Requirements
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
Additional Considerations
- Valid CDL or CDL Learner's Permit
- Experience with roadway maintenance and construction
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
- Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up
