Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Operator to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a Maintenance Operator, you will be responsible for performing a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
  • Attend work zone training, prepare work zones, and perform traffic control
  • Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques, including identifying workplace safety hazards, making suggestions for improvement, wearing proper personal protection equipment, and maintaining current knowledge of safety rules and regulations
  • Participate as a working team member performing manual labor, including clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
  • Complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance, and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment

Requirements

  • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and methods
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter

Additional Considerations

  • Valid CDL or CDL Learner's Permit
  • Experience with roadway maintenance and construction
  • Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs
  • Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up
