Job Overview

The Mortgage Loan Officer is tasked with managing all aspects of loan origination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish application sources through both internal and external networks, including branches, real estate agents, builders, financial advisors, and previous clients.
  • Generate new business opportunities from personal and unconventional resources.
  • Operate independently.
  • Complete the 1003 Residential Loan Application.
  • Gather all necessary data and documentation for processing the application and assign a loan number.
  • Input or upload application details into the Loan Origination System, Encompass.
  • Submit applications to Desktop UnderwriterTM, Loan ProspectorTM, or other decision-making tools.
  • Provide initial disclosures accurately and promptly.
  • Follow up on conditions required to either close or decline loans as necessary.
  • Price and lock interest rates with investors, adhering to Burke & Herbert Bank's pricing standards.
  • Monitor expiration dates for locks to ensure timely closing and delivery.

Additional Banking Responsibilities

  • Engage with Burke & Herbert Bank branches within the designated territory.
  • Introduce market applicants to relevant Burke & Herbert Bank personnel and generate new leads from external sources.
  • Collaborate with Burke & Herbert Bank staff to identify opportunities for cross-selling other bank products.
  • Collect fees in accordance with Burke & Herbert Bank's policies.
  • Participate in promotional activities for Burke & Herbert Bank as requested.
  • Ensure compliance with lending regulations, including early disclosures and customer information procedures.

Loan Closure Expectations

  • Achieve a minimum closed loan volume of $1,000,000 per month after the initial 60 days.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively and engage with the public.
  • Capability to analyze credit information essential for originating and processing residential loan applications.
  • Knowledge of lending compliance requirements and familiarity with conventional and government loan options.
  • Resourcefulness and the ability to collaborate with secondary market investors to ensure compliance with established guidelines.
  • Attention to detail to ensure the accuracy of loan file data.
  • Maintain data integrity at all times.
  • Ability to work independently, manage a loan pipeline, and follow up with borrowers and partners.
  • Commitment to ensuring timely loan closings.
  • Extensive experience with FHA, VA, USDA, and VHDA loans.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Preferred college degree.
  • Minimum of 1 year in mortgage loan sales with an active NMLS number.
  • Experience in origination and sales.
  • Preferred experience with Encompass.

Classification and Work Environment

This position is classified as Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Mortgage Loan Officers are typically engaged in making sales away from the bank's locations. Compensation for this role is entirely commission-based.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This role does not include supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This position operates in a clerical office setting, utilizing standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers. Job duties are conducted through telephone communication, face-to-face meetings, and computer work.

Physical Requirements

This role requires manual dexterity, the ability to lift files, and the capability to bend, stoop, or stand as necessary.
