Materials Scientist

Role Summary

Imerys seeks a seasoned, hands-on researcher to:
  • Foster business expansion through innovative product development initiatives, process enhancements, and application advancements.
  • Enhance the team's core capabilities in the research and development of inorganic (mineral)/organic particulates for applications in food and beverage production, animal nutrition, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.
  • Develop and lead New Product Development initiatives aligned with customer requirements.
This role necessitates a strong grasp of interfacial chemistry to engineer novel mineral-based solutions with exceptional properties and performance, with a significant portion dedicated to laboratory work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure a safe working environment for oneself and colleagues. Manage projects of moderate complexity; contribute significantly to the feasibility of team objectives.
  • Lead or support new product development, including particle/process/method innovation and testing tailored to applications, scaling from laboratory to commercial levels, including trials at customer sites.
  • Oversee the transition of New Product Development samples from the lab or beta products from production to customers for validation trials, gathering actionable insights.
  • Address complex, multi-variable technical challenges by designing, executing, analyzing, and interpreting statistically sound experiments to swiftly identify root causes and variable interconnections.
  • Design customized experiments to synthesize and evaluate the performance of synthetic inorganic materials based on specific customer needs.
  • Prepare technical reports documenting scientific findings, analyses, and conclusions. Present results through technical and business-oriented presentations.
  • Stay abreast of technical literature and intellectual property, utilizing this knowledge to generate innovative ideas for new products and applications, serving as a liaison with the IP Legal team to translate discoveries into patent applications.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with technical counterparts at customer organizations, service providers, and marketing teams.
  • Lead or collaborate on external initiatives with universities/institutions or other Imerys business units to assess emerging technologies.
  • Facilitate the development and professional growth of junior scientists and technicians.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Strong enthusiasm for hands-on laboratory work or customer facility engagement.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork abilities.
  • Robust technical, troubleshooting, and data analysis skills, alongside strong verbal and written communication capabilities.
  • Preferred background in surface chemistry/surface modification.
  • Able to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and balance various projects concurrently.
  • Skilled in conveying technical concepts in clear, non-technical language.
  • Proficient in statistical analysis; knowledge of Python and/or R is advantageous.
  • Experience in process chemistry and development.
  • Competent in establishing standard analytical testing methods and training analytical technicians for accurate results.
  • Ability to lead a multidisciplinary, multicultural New Product Development project team.
  • Adaptable to a dynamic and fast-paced operational environment.
  • Experience with water-soluble, crosslinking ionic/non-ionic polymers is a plus.
  • Familiarity with data analytics/machine learning applications in materials science is a plus.
Education and Experience
  • PhD or MS in Material Science, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in an industrial R&D role.
