Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Medical Laboratory Specialist to join our team at UPMC. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for ensuring the accurate performance of laboratory testing and providing exceptional service to our patients and customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interact with laboratory customers in a professional and courteous manner, responding to inquiries and providing information in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Adhere to all established laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, methods, quality assurance, proficiency testing, and personnel policies.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures according to established protocols, with precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow-up according to established protocols.
  • Process specimens for analysis, entering accurate patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into the laboratory information system.
  • Independently perform Moderately Complex and Waived tests, and perform High Complexity testing with the oversight of a Medical Technologist or with result review by a Supervisor or Manager.
  • Meet established testing protocols for precision and accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Perform and document Quality Control according to established protocols, informing supervisory personnel and/or pathologists of any unusual or problematic incidents.
  • Maintain instruments following procedural calibrations, quality control, and daily maintenance and troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training, utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration.
  • Perform minor repairs, use reagents and supplies cost-effectively, and monitor and maintain an appropriate supply inventory.
  • Demonstrate dependability, reliability, and independent judgment, recognizing priorities to accommodate department needs and acceptance of appropriate authority.
  • Follow all biohazard, chemical, and sharps safety guidelines, maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Honor confidentiality of patient information, following all compliance guidelines.
  • Assist with the training and orienting of new employees, students, and residents, using established competency and workstation operational guidelines.
  • Act as a consultative resource for troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as requested by the Laboratory Supervisor, Manager, or Director.
  • Complete assigned projects in a timely manner.
Requirements
  • Associate degree in laboratory science with certification from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).
  • Minimum of two years general laboratory experience required if certified. Three years experience in a clinical lab required in the absence of certification.
  • ASCP (or equivalent) certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) preferred. New York license required for NY locations.
