Position Overview:
UPMC is pleased to announce openings for Clinical Laboratory Scientists and Laboratory Science Specialists.
Incentives:
A sign-on bonus of up to $15,000 is available for qualified Clinical Laboratory Scientist candidates who meet the educational, licensure, and experience criteria. Laboratory Science Specialist candidates may be eligible for a bonus of up to $10,000.
Objective:
To ensure the precise execution of laboratory tests, both routine and advanced, which are essential for patient diagnosis and treatment. Utilize proficient clinical expertise to guarantee accurate testing that contributes to optimal patient care outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage with laboratory clients in a courteous and professional manner; respond promptly to inquiries. Maintain effective communication internally and externally.
- Comply with established laboratory and healthcare facility protocols regarding procedures, methods, quality control, safety, and personnel policies. Follow defined procedures for specimen collection and processing, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability. Execute qualitative and quantitative analytical methods according to established guidelines with accuracy and efficiency.
- Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, following established protocols for follow-up. Recognize factors influencing measurements and results, initiating corrective actions as necessary. Troubleshoot issues with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, or supplies according to predetermined protocols.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment in accordance with training, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration as per written instructions. Conduct minor repairs and manage reagent and supply inventory effectively.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, and instruments, including their interrelationships and the physiological conditions that may affect test outcomes.
- Participate in test development and evaluation of methodologies and equipment.
- Conduct High Complexity Testing as defined by regulatory standards without direct supervision.
- Assume temporary first-line supervisory responsibilities as assigned.
- Provide training and orientation for new staff, students, and residents as required.
Qualifications for Clinical Laboratory Scientist:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program.
- OR a Bachelor's degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and ASCP categorical certification.
- OR a Bachelor's degree with relevant experience equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician in a clinical setting.
- Preferably, at least one year of experience in a hospital laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is advantageous.
Qualifications for Laboratory Science Specialist:
- Associate degree in laboratory science with certification (or eligibility) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Assistant.
- OR a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with ASCP or equivalent certification.
- OR equivalent education and experience as defined by regulatory standards for individuals performing high complexity testing.
- Minimum one year of experience in a hospital laboratory is preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems is preferred.
Licensure and Certifications:
Preferred certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent. Specific licensure may be required for certain locations.
