UPMC is pleased to announce openings for Clinical Laboratory Scientists and Laboratory Technicians.

Sign-on bonuses of up to $15,000 are available for qualified Medical Lab Scientist candidates who meet the necessary educational, licensure, and experience criteria. Laboratory Technician candidates may be eligible for a $10,000 bonus.

Successful applicants will be assigned to the appropriate job title and salary based on their unique qualifications and background.

Objective:
To ensure the accurate execution of laboratory tests, both routine and advanced, which are essential for patient diagnosis and treatment, as well as monitoring patient responses to therapies. Utilize clinical expertise to guarantee precise testing that contributes to superior patient care outcomes.

Key Responsibilities of the Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Laboratory Technician:

  • Engage with all laboratory clients in a courteous and professional manner; respond promptly to inquiries. Maintain effective communication both internally and externally.
  • Comply with established laboratory and healthcare facility protocols regarding procedures, quality control, safety, and personnel policies. Follow defined procedures for specimen collection (including phlebotomy, when necessary) and processing, ensuring sample appropriateness and stability. Execute qualitative and quantitative analyses according to established guidelines with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Identify critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results and follow established protocols for follow-up. Recognize factors influencing measurements and results, initiating corrective actions as necessary. Troubleshoot issues with equipment, methodologies, specimens, or results according to predetermined guidelines.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment within the scope of training, adhering to defined schedules and written instructions for quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs and manage reagent and supply inventory effectively.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, and instruments, including their interrelationships and the physiological conditions affecting test outcomes.
  • Participate in or assist with the development of testing methodologies and the evaluation, selection, and implementation of laboratory equipment.
  • Conduct High Complexity Testing as defined by regulatory standards without direct supervision.
  • Temporarily assume first-line supervisory responsibilities for the section/department as delegated.
  • Train and orient new staff, students, and residents as assigned.

Qualifications for Clinical Laboratory Scientist:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution AND successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program.
  • OR Bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP categorical certification.
  • OR Bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND a minimum of two years of experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician in a clinical setting.
  • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by regulatory standards for individuals performing high complexity testing.
  • Preferred: 1 year of experience in a hospital laboratory.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is advantageous.

Qualifications for Laboratory Technician:

  • Associate degree in laboratory science with certification (or eligible new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Assistant.
  • OR Bachelor's degree in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent certification.
  • OR equivalent education and experience as defined by regulatory standards for individuals performing high complexity testing.
  • Preferred: Minimum 1 year of experience in a hospital laboratory.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is advantageous.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Preferred certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent. New York License required for positions in New York.
