UPMC is actively seeking qualified individuals for the roles of Medical Laboratory Scientists and Medical Laboratory Technicians.
Successful candidates will be assigned to the appropriate title and compensation based on their qualifications and experience.
Sign-on bonuses available: Up to $7,500 for Medical Lab Scientist candidates who meet educational and licensure criteria, and up to $5,000 for Medical Lab Technician candidates.
Role Purpose:
To ensure the precise execution of laboratory tests, both routine and advanced, which are critical for patient diagnosis and treatment evaluation. Utilize clinical expertise to deliver accurate testing results that contribute to optimal patient care outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development and evaluation of testing methodologies and equipment.
- Identify critical and abnormal test results, following established protocols for follow-up actions. Recognize and address factors impacting test results, initiating corrective measures as necessary.
- Maintain and operate laboratory equipment according to training, performing quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration as required. Conduct minor repairs and manage supply inventory effectively.
- Provide training and orientation for new staff, students, and residents as needed.
- Perform all duties associated with a Medical Laboratory Technician, including:
- Engage with laboratory clients professionally and courteously; respond to inquiries promptly.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of laboratory techniques, principles, and instruments, including understanding physiological factors that may influence test outcomes.
- Comply with established laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, quality control, safety, and personnel management. Follow protocols for specimen collection and processing, ensuring sample integrity and stability.
- Assume temporary supervisory responsibilities for the section/department as delegated.
- Conduct High Complexity Testing independently as defined by regulatory standards.
Qualifications for Medical Lab Scientist:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program,
- OR a Bachelor's degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and ASCP categorical certification,
- OR a Bachelor's degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and at least two years of experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician in a clinical setting,
- OR equivalent education and experience as defined by applicable regulations for technologists performing high complexity testing.
- Preferred: At least one year of experience in a hospital laboratory.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is advantageous.
Qualifications for Medical Lab Technician:
- Associate degree in laboratory science with certification (or eligibility as a new graduate) from an accredited institution as a Medical Laboratory Technician,
- OR a Bachelor's degree with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science and ASCP or equivalent certification, with a minimum of six months of experience.
- OR equivalent education and experience as defined by applicable regulations for individuals performing high complexity testing.
- Preferred: At least one year of experience in a hospital laboratory.
- Familiarity with medical terminology and laboratory information systems is advantageous.
Licensure and Certifications:
Preferred certifications include Medical Technologist MT(ASCP), Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS(ASCP), or equivalent. Specific state licensure may be required for certain locations.
- Act 34 clearance required.
