Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the complete recruitment, management, and growth of the assigned underwriting team, offering leadership, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Proactively identify, plan, and address routine departmental coverage and workload challenges, implementing necessary resolutions.
  • Underwrite and assess both new and renewal accounts for complex assignments.
  • Act as a subject matter expert in reviewing insurance policies.
  • Evaluate risks to determine suitable pricing, coverage, and terms. Finalize policies by recommending and binding coverage, invoicing, and issuing policies.
  • Identify the need for additional risk assessment information, order it, and evaluate its relevance.
  • Underwrite within established broad limits and authority.
  • Formulate and maintain underwriting policies and procedures.
  • Build and sustain productive relationships with agencies, effectively communicating through broker negotiations to ensure a steady flow of new business and profitable outcomes.
  • Collaborate with agents to gather supplemental underwriting information.
  • Analyze and assess endorsement requests.
  • Suggest authority levels for underwriting personnel and amendments/enhancements, including coverage, policy forms, premium rate plans, underwriting guidelines, and loss control guidelines.
  • Work closely with internal departments to implement agreed-upon program strategies and identify new opportunities.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development, including relevant industry education and training.
  • Travel as required for client relationship building, key meetings, educational development, and team gatherings.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 7 years of underwriting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage a team.
  • Extensive knowledge of the insurance industry market and appetite.
  • Capability to establish product risk factors, ensuring compliance with state insurance regulations.
  • Proficient in identifying insurance product needs within the marketplace.
  • Strong negotiation skills and mathematical proficiency.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication abilities.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Proficient in utilizing company systems.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time.
