Kensington Veterinary Hospital, a Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner, is seeking a skilled Veterinary Care Assistant

At Kensington Veterinary Hospital, we provide essential healthcare services for dogs and cats in the surrounding areas. Our facility also offers urgent care during standard operating hours and accommodates same-day, walk-in visits.

We are in search of a qualified individual (minimum of two years of experience as a Veterinary Care Assistant) to become a full-time member of our team. This role requires a commitment of 40 hours per week. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a high level of personal integrity, serve as a positive example in delivering exceptional client service, and be reliable with consistent attendance. Additionally, the candidate must possess strong communication skills and maintain a positive demeanor.

Key Responsibilities: Cleaning, organizing, stocking, animal handling and restraint, basic supervised patient care, and other tasks as assigned.

Clinical Responsibilities:
  • Prepare cages/runs for incoming patients
  • Sanitize cages/runs for outgoing patients
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the facility and equipment
  • Restock supplies as needed
  • Dispose of sharps and hazardous waste appropriately
  • Handle phone inquiries and client communication
  • Assist in laboratory tasks as directed by the veterinary medical team
  • Manage laundry duties
  • Ensure proper cleaning of instruments
  • Implement safe, low-stress (Fear Free) patient handling and restraint techniques
  • Transport patients safely
  • Walk and exercise patients as required
  • Assist in ensuring patients are clean, dry, comfortable, fed, and hydrated as directed
  • Record patient body weight
  • Collect urine and fecal samples as needed
  • Support the veterinary medical team as required
Veterinary Care Assistants are not permitted to induce anesthesia, apply casts and splints, perform dental extractions, suture tissues, administer rabies vaccinations, implant ID chips, or engage in any activities restricted by practice, state, and national regulations.

Medical Knowledge:
  • Basic veterinary terminology, both verbal and written
  • Familiarity with equipment and its application in practice
  • Awareness of potential safety hazards and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Basic medical mathematics and computer proficiency
Communication Skills:
  • Direct, clear, courteous, and professional communication
  • Inform the veterinary medical team of any changes in patient condition, issues, or concerns
  • Effectively communicate patient information with healthcare team members
  • Adhere to patient/client privacy laws across all platforms
  • Basic understanding of client communication and education
  • Always represent oneself and the practice in a professional manner
  • Foster healthy working relationships through conflict resolution and emotional intelligence
  • Be sensitive to the timing of inquiries and comments, especially in urgent situations.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred: previous experience in a veterinary environment
  • Availability to work various shifts, including nights and weekends
  • Ability to meet essential job functional requirements, including:
    • Ability to routinely lift 40+ pounds;
      • 50 pounds with assistance
    • Frequent/extended standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching
    • Exposure to various hazard situations/chemicals, including chemotherapeutic agents, anesthetic gases, infectious diseases, and potentially aggressive animals

Compensation is negotiable based on qualifications and experience, with an hourly pay rate starting at $22.00. The actual rate offered will take into account a variety of factors, including your skills, qualifications, and experience.
