Position Summary

As the Engineering Executive Director, you will be an integral part of the Executive Team, reporting directly to the Executive Director. Your role involves translating Ushahidi's strategic vision into actionable objectives for the Engineering department. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the organization's technological direction, ensuring alignment with our mission, and overseeing the development and maintenance of all technological systems.

Product Development

Ushahidi has been at the forefront of creating technology that prioritizes the inclusion of underrepresented communities in discussions that impact them. Our open-source data collection tools are designed for flexibility, allowing users to either self-host or utilize our cloud-based services. The platform is equipped with customizable surveys and supports both online and offline data collection through various low-tech channels such as SMS and WhatsApp.

By 2026, Ushahidi aims to amplify the voices of 20 million additional individuals, ensuring that marginalized communities are heard and effectively served. This will involve:

  • Enhancing data collection methods and utilizing AI for expedited data processing.
  • Establishing an accessible and secure data archive, ensuring that citizen-generated datasets are openly available and compatible with other relevant datasets.
  • Developing open-source AI models tailored to specific impact areas, revealing patterns and extracting valuable insights from our data archives.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Vision:

  • Define Engineering Vision and Objectives: Ensure engineering initiatives align with the organization's strategic goals.
  • Technical Guidance: Provide leadership and strategic direction to the engineering team, making informed decisions regarding technologies and architectures.
  • Team Development: Recruit, mentor, and cultivate a high-performing engineering team.
  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with other departments to ensure cohesive product delivery.
  • Industry Awareness: Stay informed about emerging technologies and industry trends.

Operational Oversight:

  • Project Management: Supervise engineering projects, ensuring timely and budget-compliant delivery.
  • Resource Management: Effectively allocate engineering resources, including staffing and budgeting.
  • Quality Control: Implement processes to maintain high code quality and product reliability.
  • System Security: Ensure the security of systems, networks, and data.

Qualifications

  • Over eight years of experience in engineering leadership, with at least three years managing engineering teams.
  • Experience with open-source projects and collaboration with community and UX design teams.
  • Ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven strategic thinker with experience aligning engineering efforts with organizational goals.
  • Experience managing geographically dispersed teams.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Self-motivated and collaborative, with a track record of driving projects forward.
  • Experience partnering with product management to influence product strategy and deliver roadmaps.
