Veterinary Technician

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinary Technician to join our team at the City of Aurora. As a Veterinary Technician, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional care to animals in our shelter and community.
Job Summary:The Veterinary Technician will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks, including animal evaluations, medical procedures, and administrative duties. You will work closely with our veterinarians and other staff members to ensure the highest level of care for our animals.
Key Responsibilities:- Perform animal evaluations, including age, gender, general health, and spay/neuter status
- Notify veterinarians of signs of injury and illness in a timely manner
- Properly document medical evaluation and medical findings in our computer system
- Fill prescriptions as needed for shelter and foster animals
- Administer medications, vaccinations, and microchips according to veterinarian instruction
- Educate patrons about animal medical conditions and treatments
- Communicate with foster parents via email, phone, and/or in person regarding animal health and treatment
- Administer anesthesia via IV, IM, or SC, and monitor animals while under anesthesia
- Record all surgical procedure details, including drugs given, into patient medical records
- Transfer animals to and from treatment areas, and clean kennels as needed
- Clean and sterilize surgical equipment
- Use, repair, and schedule routine maintenance of medical equipment
- Ability to maintain and order veterinary medical supplies from multiple vendors, staying within budget
- Perform and monitor cleaning and sanitation of veterinary medical areas, including treatment, isolation rooms, and surgical suite
- Check emails daily and send emails to staff regarding issues that may need to be addressed by other staff members when veterinarians are not available
- Perform euthanasia
- Responsible for the technical training and euthanasia certification of other staff members
- Strict adherence to legal requirements for administering and recording the use of controlled substances
- Adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Create appropriate SOPs and help with policies for division use
- Perform radiographs
- Be available for after-hour texting and/or phone calls regarding medical issues with shelter, field, and foster animals
- Knowledge of common zoonotic diseases, their transmission, and prevention of spread to humans and other animals
- Assist with necropsies as needed
- Supervise and train volunteers, including veterinary technician students
- Other duties as assigned
- Associates degree in veterinary technology from an accredited school
- At least 2 years of experience as a veterinary technician in surgery, animal care, and handling
- Shelter and/or high-volume spay/neuter experience preferred
- Current veterinary standards and practices, dog and cat breed characteristics, and knowledge of standard contagion practices in a shelter environment
- Animal behavior and using positive reinforcement techniques to interact with shelter animals
- Staying up to date on current shelter medical protocols, vaccination guidelines, and skills in safe animal handling and restraint techniques
This position works primarily indoors but may work outdoors assisting with programs or outreach events in varying weather conditions.
Equipment Used:Standard office equipment, including personal computers and common office software, as well as medical equipment and supplies.
