Job Overview

Position: Licensed Practical Nurse / Licensed Vocational Nurse - Wound Care

The role involves integrating wound care therapy into the comprehensive nursing care plan for patients. The incumbent will engage in patient and family education while demonstrating leadership by collaborating effectively with ancillary nursing staff and other members of the healthcare team to uphold professional nursing standards within the clinical environment. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as necessary. This position is classified as non-exempt.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care Duties

  • Adheres to nursing care standards and implements hospital policies and procedures.
  • Evaluates the patient's skin condition and wound care requirements upon admission and on a weekly basis; establishes goals and recommends suitable nursing interventions to achieve those objectives.
  • Communicates significant observations and patient reactions to the appropriate healthcare professionals (including physicians, charge nurses, and/or Wound Care Specialists) and documents these observations accurately.
  • Contributes to team discussions aimed at developing personalized nursing care plans concerning wound management.
  • Administers prescribed medications and performs treatments for assigned patients within the wound care setting.
  • Determines suitable bed surfaces upon admission and as needed.
  • Supervises and assesses nursing care delivered to patients receiving wound treatment.
  • Assists physicians during specialized tests and procedures.
  • Participates in the efficient use of supplies and ensures that all equipment is maintained in a clean and safe condition.
  • Involves in the orientation of new staff members.
  • Facilitates coordination of nursing care for patients scheduled for therapies or procedures in other departments.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication, utilizing educational opportunities with patients and their significant others.
  • Assists with or initiates emergency protocols for sudden adverse events in patients, such as cardiac arrest or emergencies related to wound care.
  • Engages in maintaining a clean and safe clinical environment.
  • Coordinates and executes physician-ordered wound care for patients.
  • Restocks the wound care cart, ensuring all supplies are current and not expired.

Unit Responsibilities

  • Participates in quality assurance and improvement initiatives within the unit.
  • Engages in hospital committees as assigned.
  • Attends mandatory educational sessions and unit meetings.
  • Complies with and enforces the hospital's dress code policy.
  • Actively identifies areas for improvement and contributes to the enhancement process.
  • Provides quarterly educational sessions for clinical staff.

Qualifications

Education and Training: Must possess a current Licensed Vocational Nursing License for the state of employment. Certification from an accredited Wound Care Certification program is preferred. Current CPR certification is required and must be maintained.

Experience: A minimum of two years of direct patient care experience is required, with a preference for experience in wound care.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Ability to independently execute detailed written or verbal instructions.
  • Capable of performing moderate physical tasks, exerting up to 50 pounds of force regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally, involving activities such as lifting, carrying, pushing, and walking.
  • Competent in utilizing appropriate equipment to perform the required duties.
