POSITION SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Director of Victim's Assistance, the individual in this role is responsible for providing crisis intervention, guidance, and support to individuals affected by crime. The role requires sound judgment, independence, initiative, and professional expertise in managing daily operations. All tasks must adhere to the safety protocols and operational regulations established by the City, as well as comply with federal, state, and local laws. Confidentiality regarding all work-related matters, including victim records, is paramount.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES include effective interaction with the public, city employees, and external organizations with patience, respect, and professionalism. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Management & Operations
- Conducts case management to ensure comprehensive service delivery and necessary follow-up.
- Assists with related case functions, including restitution and proper documentation.
- Maintains regular communication with victims to provide updates.
- Completes required documentation promptly to maintain accurate records and minimize liability.
- Documents each interaction regarding the case clearly and concisely.
- Ensures confidentiality of all client records.
- Offers crisis counseling to crime victims to help mitigate trauma and facilitate a return to normalcy.
- Provides immediate crisis intervention following a crime.
- Addresses urgent needs of victims.
- Offers support and information regarding follow-up care.
- Contacts and interviews victims to assess their needs and provide suitable referrals.
- Attempts to reach victims via phone or sends appropriate correspondence if contact is unsuccessful within 48 hours.
- Evaluates needs and provides relevant referrals.
- Advocates for victims within the criminal justice system to ensure they are informed and understand their rights.
- Facilitates victim interactions with the justice system.
- Informs victims about their rights and case progress.
- Accompanies victims to court as necessary.
- Provides ongoing emotional support throughout the criminal justice process to encourage victim cooperation.
- Refers victims to support groups or counseling services as needed.
- Offers reassurance and emotional support.
- Available for 24-hour on-call duties to provide immediate crisis intervention.
- Participates in a weekly rotation for on-call crisis intervention, safety planning, and referrals to safe housing.
- Responds to hospitals, child advocacy centers, or crime scenes as required.
- Communicates effectively in both verbal and written forms.
- Explains available options based on individual case circumstances.
- Records significant events while omitting irrelevant details.
- Develops and presents educational programs on victim assistance.
- Researches and prepares materials for assigned speaking engagements.
- Provides transportation for victims when necessary.
- Assists victims in applying for compensation through relevant funds.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
The individual is responsible for managing their performance in alignment with this job description and the expectations set by management. If there is any uncertainty regarding their role or responsibilities, it is the individual's duty to refer to the job description and seek clarification from their supervisor. Management will collaborate with the individual as needed to ensure clear communication of performance expectations and achievement of goals.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A combination of work experience or academic background equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Social Services, Criminal Justice, or a related field; OR Bilingual with an Associate's degree in Social Services, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Capable of writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Able to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, as well as fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry. Capable of applying concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Bilingual preferred.
- Familiarity with the criminal justice system, victim service agencies, and community service organizations.
- Ability to accurately assess client needs.
- Skill in interviewing clients facing sensitive personal circumstances.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public and with personnel from social service and criminal justice sectors.
- Knowledge of crisis theory and victim support applications.
- Ability to provide services under challenging and stressful conditions.
Ability to identify problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Capable of interpreting a wide range of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and managing several abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Indiana Driver's License.
