Job Summary

North Dakota State University (NDSU) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to serve as the Director of Animal Resources/Institutional Attending Veterinarian. This is a critical role that requires strong leadership, veterinary expertise, and regulatory knowledge to oversee the university's animal care and use program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Oversight
    • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the NDSU animal care and use program.
    • Make informed decisions regarding animal treatment and care, ensuring compliance with regulatory guidelines.
    • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and students.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to maintain the highest standards of animal care and use at NDSU.
  • Veterinary Care and Biosecurity
    • Provide oversight of the health and welfare of all animals used in university research and teaching, utilizing clinical best practice guidelines.
    • Maintain and oversee a comprehensive animal biosecurity program, including quarantine, health surveillance, environmental monitoring, and animal imports and exports.
    • Develop and implement animal care standards and policies to ensure the safe use of animals at NDSU facilities.
  • Training and Regulatory Compliance
    • Oversee training programs for research staff and students on animal handling, veterinary care, and regulatory compliance.
    • Ensure compliance with federal regulations, including USDA-APHIS, PHS, and OLAW guidelines.
    • Participate in institutional site visits and post-approval monitoring of animal care and use protocols.
Requirements
  • DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary school.
  • Current veterinary licensure in one US state and eligibility for licensure in ND.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of post-doctoral clinical and research experience, or completion of a laboratory animal residency.
Preferred Qualifications
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) board certification or equivalent.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of experience providing veterinary care to animals in a research setting.
  • Experience working as a veterinarian in a university or research environment.
  • Experience serving on an IACUC with agricultural production animal species and/or biomedical animal species, wildlife, and/or exotics.
