Position Summary

The Attorney General's Office (AGO) is seeking to hire a Senior Legal Assistant within the Civil Division. Joining the Vermont AGO means engaging in impactful work. Legal support professionals will receive comprehensive training to equip them with the necessary skills for professional growth and advancement.

Key Responsibilities

This role involves advanced legal support to assist up to eight (8) attorneys involved in litigation, which encompasses, but is not limited to:

  • Drafting legal documents and court pleadings
  • Preparing and responding to discovery requests
  • Compiling exhibits and gathering pertinent information and evidence
  • Drafting legal correspondence
  • Acting as a liaison with state agencies and law firms
  • Organizing litigation exhibits and binders
  • Proofreading and filing legal documents in both state and federal courts
  • Assisting with the collection and production of documents and discovery: obtaining, organizing, bates stamping, and transferring documents and electronic media
  • Reviewing documents for privilege and confidentiality as directed by attorneys and performing necessary redactions
  • Drafting, proofreading, and dispatching correspondence
  • Conducting electronic searches of emails and similar files
  • Coordinating meetings, interviews, and depositions, including teleconferences and video conferences
  • Managing calendars for deadlines and events
  • Handling mail distribution
  • Providing phone/front desk coverage as needed
  • Maintaining the Law Manager database: entering, updating, and closing out matters such as litigation and contracts, generating reports, and conducting conflict checks
  • Updating Statute Sets

Work Environment

Work is primarily conducted in office settings, with occasional fieldwork that may require travel. Some evening or overtime work may be necessary. Candidates must be able to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and interact professionally with the public.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or higher in criminal justice, law, or a related legal field AND three (3) or more years of experience in paralegal duties.

OR

Six (6) or more years of experience in paralegal duties.
