PROGRAM SUMMARY

The Cadet Program serves as an introduction to a fulfilling career in law enforcement for interested individuals. Candidates must be between the ages of 18 and 20 upon entering the program. This initiative offers practical training and mentorship to equip Cadets with the necessary skills and knowledge for future employment opportunities as Police Officers with the Kennewick Police Department. Cadets may also qualify for tuition reimbursement during their training and should demonstrate a strong desire to pursue full-time employment in law enforcement with the City of Kennewick.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on assignments, typical responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting with various fundamental duties across different divisions of the Kennewick Police Department.
  • Providing support in research projects, special reports, and departmental challenges.
  • Collecting, compiling, and reporting statistical data.
  • Gaining a working knowledge of departmental practices, procedures, equipment, and organizational structures.
  • Performing related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must be 18-20 years old at the time of the initial Physical Abilities Test (PAT) and Written Essay exam.
  • Must meet the criteria for consideration for Civil Service appointment as an Entry Level Police Officer between ages 21 and 22.
  • Must successfully pass civil service testing standards and meet departmental requirements.
  • Must be enrolled or have an approved plan to enroll at an accredited college or university in courses leading to a degree and/or certificate at the time of hire.
  • Must possess a high school diploma, GED Certificate, or equivalent certification from the state department of education.
Physical Abilities Test (PAT)
Must successfully complete the Physical Abilities Test (PAT). For detailed information about PAT requirements, please refer to the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission website.
Supplemental Requirements

Knowledge of:
  • Basic research and statistical methods.
  • English language usage, spelling, and punctuation.
Ability to:
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Collect, compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data.
This position does not include health or retirement benefits. However, it is eligible for Washington State Paid Sick Leave, accruing 1 hour for every 40 hours worked.
