Role Summary
As a Soil Research Specialist, you will engage in innovative research aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity while safeguarding environmental integrity and promoting the sustainable management of natural resources.
Key Responsibilities
1. Formulate and implement strategies for effective water and nutrient management to optimize efficiency in both rainfed and irrigated agricultural systems.
2. Investigate and develop practices such as conservation tillage, cover cropping, and biomass management to bolster soil health, increase carbon sequestration, and enhance nutrient recycling, thereby ensuring long-term agricultural viability.
3. Explore the integration of engineered byproducts, including biochar and recovered nutrients, into soil management frameworks to improve soil quality and agricultural output, while addressing soil degradation issues.
4. Create and refine simulation models to assess the effects of various byproducts on soil functionality and plant development, as well as their environmental interactions.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following educational and experiential criteria:
Educational Background
A degree in soil science or a closely related field, encompassing at least 30 semester hours in biological, physical, or earth sciences, with a minimum of 15 semester hours in core areas such as soil genesis, chemistry, physics, and fertility.
Experience Requirements
For the GS-12 level, candidates should possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level or hold a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. For the GS-13 level, one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level is required.
Specialized Experience
Applicants should demonstrate experience in conducting independent research focused on soil ecosystem health, developing water and nutrient management strategies, and publishing findings in reputable scientific journals.
