Chief Executive Officer for Global Sustainability Initiative

South Burlington, Vermont, United States Korn Ferry Executive Search Full time
About the Organization

Imagine a world where fundamental challenges to global sustainability and social equity are addressed at their core.

For over 26 years, Population Media Center has empowered communities to transform attitudes and behaviors, fostering a healthier, more equitable, and thriving planet, particularly focusing on women and girls.

Population Media Center (PMC) is a global non-profit organization dedicated to sustainability and broadcast production, creating impactful entertainment that promotes a more equitable and sustainable world.

With over 60 shows aired in more than 50 countries and in 30+ languages, PMC tackles sensitive and often taboo subjects.

Our recent production in Nepal motivated approximately 54,000 individuals to commit to ending child marriage.

In northern Nigeria, 67% of new reproductive health clients attributed their clinic visits to our show, achieving a remarkable cost per new client of just 30 cents.

Such outcomes are extraordinary and not a result of conventional methods.

One of the most pressing challenges our world faces today is combating deeply rooted harmful beliefs and misinformation - an area where PMC excels.

PMC's diverse team of social scientists, artists, and advocates are adept at transforming popular entertainment into a powerful tool for positive change.

They have partnered with like-minded organizations for decades, leveraging unique community strengths to enhance social impact.

PMC employs local teams to write, create, and produce its shows in native languages, respecting cultural contexts.

When PMC expanded its efforts in the U.S., its show became one of Hulu's top five offerings and marked Hollywood's first series featuring an all-Latino cast.

East Los High tackled teen pregnancy, directing over 27,000 viewers to Planned Parenthood's resources while receiving six Emmy nominations.

PMC's mission centers on inspiring individuals with possibilities and empowering them to make informed choices.

By integrating behavioral theory, media insights, and culturally relevant narratives, PMC's innovative approach entertains while empowering. It transforms the narrative by changing who tells the story, thereby reshaping societal norms.

As we navigate a global struggle over power dynamics within families and communities, we also confront unprecedented climate challenges that disproportionately affect women and girls, who often possess unrecognized power.

The urgency for PMC's mission is paramount. PMC is committed to dismantling cultures of dominance and fostering human rights and sustainable practices.

After leading the organization for over 26 years, founder Bill Ryerson will be transitioning to allow for new leadership to continue challenging harmful social norms and empowering healthier populations.

Bill will remain engaged, supporting the new President in critical areas such as fundraising, global connections, and sharing insights into PMC's history and methodologies.

Since 1998, PMC's award-winning audio and video series, featuring relatable characters and real-life choices, have inspired positive behavioral changes worldwide.

PMC is seeking a President and CEO to guide the organization into its next chapter.

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about navigating the complex media and funding landscapes to ensure PMC's relevance, strategic evolution, and expanded global impact.

PMC is composed of passionate creators driven by purpose.

Position Overview

The President and Chief Executive Officer will oversee all aspects of Population Media Center's operations.

In collaboration with the Board of Directors and Senior Leadership Team, this individual will spearhead the development and execution of a clear strategy to realize PMC's vision of a sustainable planet with equal rights for all.

The President and CEO will establish policies and objectives aligned with Board directives and corporate bylaws, managing a Senior Leadership Team that includes the Vice President of Development, Vice President of International Programs, Vice President of Finance, and Vice President of Global Marketing and U.S. Programs.

Working alongside PMC's Founder & President Emeritus, the successful candidate will facilitate the transition of existing relationships both domestically and internationally.

The President and CEO will collaborate with senior leadership to ensure that policies, procedures, and practices reflect a strong organizational culture, promoting alignment, collaboration, and learning across teams with a focus on measurable outcomes.

This role will serve as a compelling advocate for PMC's mission, enhancing the organization's visibility in both domestic and international development and funding communities, while leading efforts to diversify and expand funding sources for greater impact.

Key Responsibilities

The President and CEO will represent the organization, working closely with the Board of Directors, Senior Leadership Team, and other stakeholders to create and implement the strategic direction of PMC.

The successful candidate will be an innovative, strategic, and mission-driven leader who inspires others, builds relationships, and communicates effectively.

This individual will be motivated by innovation, impact, and sustainability.

The next President & CEO will be a thought leader in one or more areas, including media, storytelling, women's rights, global sustainability, and population issues.

They will advocate for PMC on a global scale, uplifting those most affected and likely to drive cultural change, thereby inspiring significant community progress towards a more equitable and thriving world for all.

Leadership and Operations

  • Maximize PMC's potential to achieve its vision and mission. Collaborate with the Board of Directors and Senior Leadership Team to develop strategic and tactical plans with clear targets for both short- and long-term goals.
  • Provide leadership for all operational and administrative functions of PMC, ensuring the organization's long-term financial health.
  • Act as a global ambassador and spokesperson, cultivating relationships with headquarters and country staff, including the UN, national and regional governments, foundations, international NGOs, and major donors to advance and diversify PMC's revenue streams.
  • Ensure that all PMC activities and culture are rooted in the organization's values.
  • Enhance PMC's global brand through active relationship development across multiple sectors, presenting PMC's vision and services at public events, meetings, and conferences.

  • Communicate effectively with the Board, providing timely and accurate information necessary for informed decision-making.
  • Collaborate with the Board and senior leadership to identify and attract prospective Board members and donors.
  • Facilitate effective board committees and working groups to leverage the Board's talent and experience.
  • In partnership with the Vice President of Finance, develop a financial plan and annual budget for Board approval.
Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for PMC's mission, a proven ability to cultivate a diverse and equitable workplace culture, and at least 15 years of leadership experience, preferably in international development or related fields.
