Operating Room Technician

Sign-On Incentive: Full-time Non-Certified Surgical Technicians (.9 and above) are eligible for a $10,000 sign-on incentive, while part-time Surgical Technicians can receive a $5,000 sign-on incentive. This offer is available to newly hired external candidates only.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute tasks in the scrub role as designated.
    • 1) Efficiently establish a sterile environment in a timely manner.
    • 2) Adhere to departmental protocols regarding specimens, counts, and handling of contaminated instruments.
    • 3) Sustain the sterile field and boundaries before and during procedures.
    • 4) Serve as a mentor, imparting knowledge in a supportive and educational manner.
    • 5) Assist in emergency situations as required.
    • 6) Ensure a safe working environment in compliance with regulatory standards.
    • 7) Maintain educational documentation and timekeeping records.
    • 8) Uphold competencies.
    • 9) Be available for on-call duties.
  • Accountable for preparing the surgical field and ensuring the availability of supplies and instruments.
    • 1) Confirm that instruments, supplies, and equipment are ready according to physician preference cards.
    • 2) Understand specific physician requirements by thoroughly reviewing scrub tips.
    • 3) Assist in unwrapping sterile supplies and instruments.
    • 4) Help with cleanup and turnover after each case.
    • 5) Utilize supplies efficiently to minimize waste and reduce costs.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to foster a cooperative work environment.
    • 1) Contribute to achieving the goals of Surgical Services and Advocate Health.
    • 2) Share clinical and professional insights in a supportive and educational manner.
    • 3) Demonstrate self-direction in effectively managing work time.
    • 4) Accept and fulfill team responsibilities as assigned.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
    • 1) Uphold patient confidentiality.
    • 2) Employ guest relations techniques with healthcare team members and patients.
  • Commit to professional development.
    • 1) Participate in unit and hospital committees and projects.
    • 2) Exhibit self-direction in maintaining professional skills.
    • 3) Independently complete assignments and projects.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to perform scrub duties independently.
  • High school diploma or GED, along with completion of a surgical technology program.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials, life-threatening diseases, and radiation. Must recognize the needs and behaviors of specific patient age groups. Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and work collaboratively with others. Effective communication while wearing a mask and in non-facing situations is essential. Must adapt to a stressful and dynamic environment, work designated shifts, including weekends and holidays, and assume on-call responsibilities.
  • If the position involves direct patient care or contact, the following lifting requirement applies: ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts exceeding 35 pounds, or when the patient cannot assist, patient handling equipment must be utilized with at least one other associate when available. Unique patient lifting and movement situations will be assessed individually.
