Position Summary:

The role involves delivering essential support services to the Perioperative team by executing various responsibilities as outlined below, while contributing to the mission, vision, and values of Rush and adhering to established policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Transport specimens collected during surgical procedures to designated testing areas using the safest and most efficient methods as instructed by nursing personnel.
  2. Inform the circulating RN prior to specimen removal from the operating room. Conduct rounds in assigned operating rooms throughout the day, ensuring all rooms are monitored. Promptly respond to urgent specimen delivery requests.
  3. Alert the RN if documentation is incomplete and gather any missing or inaccurate information from nursing and surgical services as necessary.
  4. Deliver requested items, including medications from the pharmacy or blood center, to support OR Transport Services.
  5. Procure supplies and equipment essential for patient care as required.
  6. Manage inventory and restock supplies in the support technician work area.
  7. Oversee the blanket warmer in the sterile core and operating rooms.
  8. Notify the dispatch supervisor when additional supplies are necessary.
  9. Maintain a clutter-free environment in operating rooms and corridors.
  10. Ensure that all equipment does not obstruct access to fire doors, electrical panels, or air flow vents.
  11. Communicate with the Schedule Board Coordinator and/or Education/Quality Coordinator if tasks cannot be completed or if further guidance is needed.
  12. Assist nursing staff with the setup and turnover of operating rooms, including retrieving equipment and supplies.
  13. Open supplies and instruments on the sterile field as directed and under the supervision of OR staff.
  14. Review case cart sheets and gather necessary supplies and trays.
  15. Notify the circulating RN of any missing items or stock shortages.
  16. Assist in dismantling the surgical table in collaboration with OR staff.
  17. Support patient positioning and transportation as requested by nursing staff.
  18. Monitor refrigerator/freezer temperatures and document appropriately.
  19. Inform nursing management of any temperature discrepancies.
  20. Coordinate with Medical Center Engineering when refrigerator defrosting is required.
  21. Address any environmental deficiencies to ensure safety.
  22. Maintain cleanliness and organization of storage areas and assigned rooms after surgical procedures.
  23. Ensure all suction devices are docked post-case load and clean storage cabinets.
  24. Prepare for the following day's patients by ensuring all necessary items are available in the operating room.
  25. Assist the circulating RN during activation of the Major Blood Loss Protocol.
  26. Ensure blood is returned from operating room kiosks after surgical procedures.
  27. At the end of the shift, review remaining blood in kiosks and return any that is no longer needed.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Proficient in reading, writing, and clear communication.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Customer service orientation.
  • Demonstrated competency in all required skills.
  • Ability to remain standing and mobile for extended periods.
  • Proficient in using wireless communication devices.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
  • Attention to detail in document verification and data entry.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in an operating room setting.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • CNA Certification.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift or carry objects weighing 35-40 lbs and assist in positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs. Work conditions may involve exposure to potentially infectious materials and strong chemical agents.
