About the Role

The Center for Global Development is seeking highly qualified individuals to join our team as Senior Fellows or Fellows. As a Senior Fellow or Fellow, you will lead research and policy initiatives in global health, sustainable development, and education. You will design and lead cutting-edge research that informs policy in the area of global development related to our work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and lead research projects that inform policy in global health, sustainable development, and education.
  • Engage in policy outreach activities, including speaking engagements, blogging, and interacting with key individuals and groups in the donor and technical communities.
  • Lead or participate in expert group consultations and working groups.
  • Publish research papers, policy briefs, and/or short commentaries targeted to policymakers, academics, and our public audience.
  • Track and respond to research and policy developments in relevant areas.
  • Review and support our colleagues' research and analysis in relevant areas.
  • Supervise and help professionally develop research assistants and coordinators.
  • Engage and contribute to our wider initiatives around diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as playing a key part in creating a culture that aligns with our mission and values.
Areas of Expertise

We are open to hiring highly qualified development experts in any sub-specialty, but we have current needs in the following program areas:

  • Global Health Policy: to work on a broad set of global health issues, including the efficiency and effectiveness of global institutions, problems of collective action, including pandemic preparedness and response and antimicrobial resistance, the future of the global health financing architecture, and the interplay between climate and health, among others.
  • Sustainable Development Finance: to expand the existing development and climate finance pathways, unlock new resources, allocate finance for impact and efficiency, build sustainable development finance markets and instruments, and promote reform of multilateral and bilateral finance institutions.
  • Education and Child Well-Being: to understand the best ways to improve children's education and their well-being, build human capital, and reduce poverty and inequality in the developing world, including on topics that are neglected or under-funded, such as violence against children, lead poisoning, and school meals, and to feed into the work of the Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel.
  • Sustainable Agriculture: to develop rigorous analysis, including benefit-cost analysis, climate modeling, industry mapping, etc., making the case for a new set of Advance Market Commitments (AMCs) for climate-resilient crop innovation and scale-up.
  • Climate Change: to lead cutting-edge research and policy on climate change, for example, the most cost-effective approaches to achieve adaptation and mitigation in low- and middle-income countries and designing and implementing pull mechanisms to incentivize climate change innovations, and perform rigorous cost-benefit analyses to inform policy decisions.
Requirements

The successful candidate will ideally possess the following qualifications:

  • Fellow: At least a master's degree in economics, international development, public policy, or a related field. Recent record of complex, substantive research, or policy analysis. Experience in the development space with a record of policy influence, and a network of professional relationships. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as high-level organizational skills. Ability to work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team while remaining individually accountable for delivering on research agenda.
  • Senior Fellow: Strong preference for a doctoral degree in economics or a related field, but equivalent research track records will be considered. Extensive experience in the international economics, development, political science, climate, and/or gender space with a long record of publication and policy influence, and a network of strong professional relationships. Experience engaging with policymakers in low- and middle-income and international organizations plus evidence-to-policy translation. Body of original, scholarly work applying quantitative research to economic and institutional issues. Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as high-level organizational skills. Ability to work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team while remaining individually accountable for delivering on research agenda. Demonstrated leadership and management skills. Successful track record in mobilizing grant funding is a plus.
