Job Summary

Under the direction of SPD leadership, the incumbent plays a key role in maintaining the overall workflow of the shift. The incumbent is responsible for decontaminating, operationally checking, assembling, sterilizing, and distributing surgical instrumentation, implants, supplies, and equipment throughout the Medical Center. The incumbent maintains accurate documentation related to these duties and assists in the training of other Sterile Processing Technicians. The incumbent troubleshoots equipment, instruments, and customer issues. The incumbent operates and maintains sterilization equipment, decontamination equipment, and computer systems related to these duties. The incumbent participates in performance improvement planning and implementation. This position requires the flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Responsibilities
  • Decontaminate and process surgical instrumentation, implants, supplies, and equipment
  • Operate and maintain sterilization equipment, decontamination equipment, and computer systems
  • Assist in the training of other Sterile Processing Technicians
  • Troubleshoot equipment, instruments, and customer issues
  • Maintain accurate documentation related to duties
  • Participate in performance improvement planning and implementation

Requirements
  • High School graduate, G.E.D. or equivalent
  • Minimum of one (1) year of previous Sterile Processing technician experience
  • Detailed knowledge and ability to operate machinery including sterilizers, washers, and ultrasonic cleaners
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems including Windows OS, keyboard & mouse operations
  • Demonstrated ability to competently perform multiple, complex tasks
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of standard precautions for safety and prevention of cross-contamination
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English to communicate with nursing, technical, and medical staff
  • Ability to safely move heavy trays and equipment, lifting to 50 pounds, and stand for prolonged periods

License/Certification
  • Current Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Tech (CRCST), IAHCSMM or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT), CBSPD
  • Maintain current certification as an SPD Technician through an accredited organization
