About the Role:

This position is dedicated to ensuring a secure and safe environment for all individuals within the Colorado Mental Health Institute and the surrounding community. The role involves enforcing state laws, traffic regulations, and policies related to the custody of individuals deemed criminally insane and those from correctional facilities. The Officer I will adhere to established legal standards and departmental policies while occasionally taking on leadership responsibilities in the absence of higher-ranking officers.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Law Enforcement Duties:
    • Provide immediate intervention during crisis situations.
    • Utilize sound judgment and emotional control in assessing potential crises, considering the well-being of patients and staff.
    • Employ effective communication and de-escalation techniques when interacting with individuals.
    • Conduct regular patrols to maintain security within the facility.
    • Enforce laws and regulations, exercising custody powers when necessary, and preparing reports for legal proceedings.
  • Leadership Responsibilities:
    • Mentor and coach fellow employees, promoting adherence to departmental policies.
    • Facilitate shift briefings and communicate essential information regarding patient and facility needs.
    • Identify and address safety concerns to mitigate potential threats.
  • Patient Transport:
    • Safely transport individuals to various locations, ensuring the integrity of their belongings and the vehicle.
    • Plan and execute transportation routes, considering safety and emergency protocols.
  • Training and Development:
    • Participate in all required training sessions and maintain necessary certifications.
    • Complete all mandatory training in accordance with departmental policies.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
Current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification and one year of law enforcement experience (excluding corrections).

Preferred Skills:
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Experience working with individuals with mental health issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work independently.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Successful completion of a background check and drug screening.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
