Overview of Responsibilities

The University of the District of Columbia is in search of an enthusiastic, service-oriented professional with strong collaborative abilities to take on the role of Faculty Member in Early Childhood Education. This position entails delivering a comprehensive array of courses related to early childhood care and education, child development, family engagement, effective communication, curriculum design, inclusive practices, and administrative oversight. Additionally, the role involves coordinating the observation and practical components for students enrolled in the program. This is a full-time tenure track position spanning 9 months.

Key Responsibilities

The Faculty Member in Early Childhood Education will:
  • Deliver courses focused on early childhood education
  • Advise and support student majors while maintaining accurate records for each advisee
  • Assist in attracting new students and ensuring the retention of current students
  • Organize and facilitate field experience opportunities for students, making assignments as necessary
  • Respond to student inquiries promptly
  • Stay updated on the latest developments in early childhood education
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors within the discipline
  • Exhibit and maintain proficiency in teaching, research, and professional engagement, including participation in relevant associations and community service
  • Engage in college governance and attend departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings
  • Work with colleagues to conduct scheduled program evaluations and utilize findings to enhance the curriculum
  • Prepare and distribute course outlines that align with established learning outcomes, assess student performance, and maintain grading records
  • Create assessments and activities suitable for integration into the program's electronic assessment platform
  • Maintain a minimum of five office hours weekly
  • Assist in securing external funding for educational programs
  • Contribute to the development and instruction of online courses; familiarity with instructional technology and learning management systems is highly desirable
  • Teach during various times, including days, evenings, and weekends, potentially across multiple campus locations (Instruction modes may include in-person, hybrid, online - both asynchronous and synchronous, and/or combinations thereof)
  • Adhere to institutional and program policies and procedures
  • Recommend appropriate textbooks and instructional materials
  • Participate in the program's Self-Study as part of the accreditation process
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Essential Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. (preferred) or Master's degree in early childhood education, child development, or a related field with a focus on early childhood education
  • A minimum of two years of full-time teaching experience in a post-secondary institution, with a preference for community college experience
  • Experience in training caregivers to implement developmentally appropriate practices for infants and toddlers in group settings is preferred
  • Certification in the Program for Infant and Toddler Caregivers (PITC) is a plus
  • Proficiency in Spanish is an advantage
Candidates for the rank of Faculty Member must meet the following criteria:
  1. Possess an appropriate terminal degree or commit to completing this degree within a specified timeframe as outlined in the initial contract; and
Relevant professional experience and accomplishments may substitute for formal teaching experience when necessary.

In cases where formal teaching experience is limited or absent, candidates must demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is part of the collective bargaining unit represented by the National Education Association (NEA), and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: Currently, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide visa sponsorship (e.g., H-1B). This position is also not eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: Applicants who are bona fide District residents at the time of application may receive a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless they decline the preference points. If selected, the individual must present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency before the effective date of appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: In accordance with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the selected individual will be required to notify their immediate supervisor in writing within five (5) days of any criminal drug statute conviction occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a "satisfactory background investigation" is made at the sole discretion of the University. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment, or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
