Job Summary

The Maryland SPCA is seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Volunteer Coordinator to join our team. As a key member of our Community Care & Advocacy department, you will be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day operations of our volunteer program, ensuring the success and growth of our volunteer base.

Key Responsibilities
  • Recruit, onboard, and train volunteers, with a focus on animal handling training.
  • Develop and implement strategies to sustain volunteer involvement, including mentoring, engaging, and recognizing individual volunteers.
  • Coordinate volunteer visits and projects, and support interns working in various departments.
  • Collaborate with other departments to produce training and communication materials.
  • Utilize volunteer management software to track and update volunteer information.
  • Ensure a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for volunteers.
  • Maintain volunteer areas and supplies.
  • Liaise with the public, staff, and volunteers, and report issues to the Volunteer Manager as needed.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of the 'Fear Free Shelters' course within 90 days.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Comfort working with cats and dogs of varying sizes and temperaments.
  • Experience with positive reinforcement techniques and animal handling.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations and prioritize tasks.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and commitment to the Maryland SPCA's mission.
Working Conditions
  • Work in an animal shelter and office setting.
  • Exposure to animals poses risks, including bites, scratches, and zoonotic diseases.
  • Moderate noise and odor levels.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions.
