Position Overview

The Senior Accountant will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer and will be responsible for overseeing the financial and accounting operations of Vital Voices in partnership with our outsourced accounting services team. This role requires a solid understanding of accounting principles, including preparation of Form 990, audit readiness, reconciliations, general accounting practices, credit card expense management, payroll processing, and accounts payable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and submit Form 990 and other necessary tax documents in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Assist in audit preparation by gathering supporting documentation, performing reconciliations, and providing necessary explanations to auditors.
  • Conduct monthly reconciliations of bank accounts and financial statements to ensure accuracy.
  • Perform annual NICRA calculations and submit required documentation per organizational and regulatory guidelines.
  • Oversee general accounting tasks, including journal entries, accruals, and adjustments.
  • Manage the credit card expense reporting process, ensuring timely submission and reconciliation of employee expense reports.
  • Process semi-monthly payroll using Paylocity, ensuring accuracy in pay rates, deductions, and reimbursements.
  • Assist in the annual budgeting process, including template creation and data entry into the general ledger system.
  • Collaborate with third-party vendors to manage accounts payable transactions, including invoice verification and payment processing.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to support management decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to address financial inquiries and support overall organizational objectives.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required; CPA preferred, with 4-8 years of relevant experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles, including Form 990 preparation and audit compliance.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, in English.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to a dynamic work environment with tight deadlines.
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications (especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint), database software (e.g., Salesforce), financial systems (Sage Intacct, Planning Maestro), HRIS systems (Paylocity), and project management tools (Asana).
  • Experience in cross-functional collaboration to achieve key objectives.
This is a full-time, exempt hybrid position based in Washington, DC, requiring in-person attendance at the Vital Voices Headquarters on designated days.
