Job Title: Head Start Assistant Teacher/Driver

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Early Childhood Educator to join our team as a Head Start Assistant Teacher/Driver. As a key member of our preschool program, you will be responsible for providing a safe and nurturing environment for our young students, while also ensuring their physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant preschool program.
  • Provide safe and efficient transportation services to 20 children.
  • Follow through on daily educational plans within the classroom and plan activities.
  • Set up and maintain a developmentally appropriate classroom environment, including organization of space and material storage.
  • Set up educational and/or social service-related home visits with assigned families.
  • Plan and deliver daily lesson plans.
  • Deliver food service and eat with the children.
  • Perform daily cleaning and classroom preparation duties.
  • Complete required documentation and follow-up activities.
  • Work in a team setting with other staff to assess the needs of families and children.
  • Participate in Child Development Associates (CDA) program and/or other training activities.
  • Support the Head Start goals, objectives, and performance standards.
  • Develop and drive a bus route.
  • Implement a daily bus route and transport for program-related activities.
  • Ensure the bus is in operation in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Perform necessary upkeep, maintenance, and safety checks for the bus.
  • Monitor the behavior of children on the bus and ensure their safety.
  • Keep the assigned vehicle clean.
  • Report any accidents or malfunctions to the Head Start Manager.
  • Record gas slips and report on in-kind services.

Requirements:

  • Associates or bachelor's degree (any field) or High School Diploma or GED and six months experience in a structured early childhood education setting.
  • Must obtain Child Development Associate (CDA) credential within 2 years of hire date.
  • Must obtain valid Oregon School Bus Drivers Certificate and Oregon Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with the proper endorsements or CDL Permit and be able to obtain a valid Oregon Commercial Drivers License (within 90-days of employment) with the proper endorsements.
  • Must pass a criminal history background check, including a sex offender registry check, and obtain one of the following through the Central Background Registry: State or tribal criminal history records, including fingerprints; or, Federal Bureau of Investigation criminal history records, including fingerprints; and Child abuse and neglect state registry check, if available.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Positive methods of child guidance, including redirection, consistency, and prevention.
  • Developmentally appropriate practices for early childhood.
  • Basic understanding of child development.
  • Ability to work effectively with low-income families.
  • Use a positive approach in directing child behavior.
  • Use positive methods of guidance, including redirection, consistency, and prevention.
  • Be comfortable working with children and families from a variety of social, ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Work cooperatively with other program staff.
  • Work cooperatively as a team member and accept direction.
  • Be reliable and punctual.
  • Work some evenings and weekends.
  • Meet the physical demands of the classroom environment and facilitate and support the physical activity of 20 young children.
  • Establish and maintain professional boundaries.

Other Requirements:

  • Obtain Food Handler's card within 15 days of hire.
  • Obtain First Aid/CPR within the first 30 days of hire.
  • Screened for tuberculosis.
  • Tolerant and sensitive when working with children and families.

Salary: $20.45 per hour
