POSITION: SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR

The Center for Developmentally Disabled (CDD) is a private, non-profit organization established to support individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities in the Kansas City, MO region. CDD offers a range of services including residential care, employment assistance, day habilitation for adults, and a specialized educational institution for children referred from the local area.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:
A college degree and valid Missouri Certification in Special Education (SDD, EMH, BD/ED, LD, CC, and/or ECSE) are required.

EXPERIENCE:
A minimum of 2 to 3 years of teaching experience in special education, particularly with autism or behavioral challenges, is preferred.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:
Proficiency in using standard office equipment such as telephones, fax machines, computers, and copiers is necessary. Candidates must also be able to maintain certifications in Abuse & Neglect, First Aid/CPR, Mandt, and Gentle Teaching.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The role involves working in an educational setting designed for students with developmental disabilities and behavioral challenges. Candidates must meet physical requirements, including the ability to lift and move 50+ lbs, as well as perform various physical tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Design and implement educational programs and curricula tailored for children with special developmental and behavioral needs.
  2. Facilitate engaging, non-fail activities that promote self-esteem and readiness skills, focusing on self-help and behavior management.
  3. Establish goals and objectives for Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and provide necessary data for evaluations and progress reports.
  4. Create effective lesson plans and substitute plans as needed, adhering to behavior plans outlined in IEPs.
  5. Maintain positive communication with parents during phone calls and IEP meetings.
  6. Collaborate with staff to develop and implement daily class schedules.
  7. Collect and analyze data to assess student progress and the effectiveness of teaching methods.
  8. Ensure classroom cleanliness and organization, including the upkeep of bulletin boards.
  9. Provide guidance and support to paraprofessional staff in the classroom.
  10. Participate in staff evaluations and contribute to the annual review process.
  11. Comply with policies and procedures outlined in the staff handbook and Code of Ethics.
  12. Maintain all required certifications and attend necessary training sessions.
  13. Engage in state testing training and implement assessments for students.
  14. Participate in fundraising and public relations activities as appropriate.
  15. Meet all deadlines set by supervisors and fulfill additional duties as assigned.

Attention to detail, strong computer skills, organizational abilities, excellent verbal and written communication, capacity to meet deadlines, confidentiality, adaptability to changing environments, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
