Job Summary

The City of Alexandria, LA is seeking a skilled Zoo Keeper to join our team. As a Zoo Keeper, you will be responsible for the daily care and maintenance of exotic animals, including large cats, and the upkeep of zoo grounds and facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform general cleaning and maintenance of animal exhibits, including removing unconsumed food, manure, and refuse, and cleaning feed troughs, bowls, and containers.
  • Maintain exhibit materials, such as watering plants and flowers, installing limbs and nesting or bedding materials, and cleaning and maintaining perches, nest boxes, props, and decorative materials.
  • Create and provide daily physical and psychological environmental enrichment for different species.
  • Provide daily training sessions to continue with maintained behaviors for individual animals while learning to create cues and behaviors to obtain species-specific behaviors.
  • Perform grounds keeping and general cleaning tasks, including mowing grass, trimming hedges, raking leaves, sweeping sidewalks, picking up litter, and tending flower beds.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the health and welfare of zoo animals, including providing fresh food daily, preparing special diets for animal groups, providing sufficient water, assisting in administering prescribed medications, inspecting animals daily to ensure security and proper enclosure, and remaining alert to any illness, abnormal behavior, physical conditions, and aggressive or potentially dangerous tendencies and reporting these to a supervisor.
  • Provide routine information and assistance to the visiting public, including answering questions about animals and exhibits, and assisting in special events and educational programs.
  • Respond to emergency situations, including assisting in the capture and restraint of wild animals which may or may not be sedated, and acting as a first responder if the public or the animals are harmed.
  • Assist with the transport of animals to and from the airport or other zoos.
  • Handle, prepare, and/or maintain the appropriate paperwork necessary to the functions of this position, including recording and filing keeper daily reports, animal medical records, animal enrichment records, and animal feeding charts, and recording time sheets and community service records.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in one of the life sciences or equivalent experience working with animals in an accredited institution.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification.
